So, I've arrived at the academy, where demons are separated from hunters, well, only until we pick our demon, who will live with us. Most students took their brooms or the train, but since I was running late I just teleported into the beginning of the induction ceremony. Everyone sat there gawking at me.

Then I remembered: normal hunters can't teleport. Only demon and warlocks were able to teleport.

Shit.

"Be gone demon! Your people have not yet been called into the hall."

"I'm not a demon." I said.

"Then who might you be hunter?"

"I'm Celia."

The host blanched as she realized who I was. I always love a persons reaction when they realized they fucked up.

"Look, I know my opinion doesn't matter, but I don't think you should speak to demons like that. I mean they are more powerful than you, than any of us really. I can see why you mistook me for a demon, I did teleport in." I gave her a smile.

"But I was running a bit late, uniform malfunctions."

As our first test of entry we were supposed to make our own uniform, something that represents who we are. We would use that uniform for special occasions and would have to make a standard one for everyday use.

"I apologize, would you please take a seat Ms.Celia?" Her forehead was glistening with sweat.

There really wasn't anything for her to be scared of.

"Certainly, Ms.Host. And please do try to refrain from speaking to demons like that."

I beamed for a split second for effect and sat down in a vacant seat. The host continued with her speech as normal, as she should. I ignored what she was saying most of the time, tuning in every now and then.

I'm not sure if any of it was important, save for the rules.

She got my full attention when she said "Now, the familiar pairings." Everyone was immediately alert. Some even seemed nervous. My blood started buzzing from the excitement.

"As you all know, hunters are supposed to find a demon to be their lifelong partners. Some famous hunter demon pairs have actually become romantically involved. For example, Helen and Oscar Bianchi. It is not unusual to become romantically involved with your partner, as you will be spending a lot of time together. Whoever you choose is who you'll stay with. Forever."

She eyed the students and continued.

"A male can only choose a female familiar and a female can only choose a male hunter if you are planning to be... romantically involved. This should not be news to anyone. It is an old taboo and must be followed as the Council decrees it." A girl beside me quite literally turned bright red, and not just her face, her whole body. She must be a mermaid/hunter blood mix.

What an interesting girl.

She caught me staring and whispered "I know, I'm bright red! It's pretty weird but because of my blood it's something I can't control. I'm a mermaid/human mix."

"So it's easy to read your emotions."

"Yeah, pretty much, it sucks because my parents always know when I'm lying." I chuckled at that.

"What's your name?"

"Sabrina Montego. What's yours?"

"Celia. Just Celia."

I usually expect some kind of response to my name, maybe a face blanch, a look of shock, something. But she didn't even think about it, I was quite impressed by that and I decided on the spot that we would be friends. "So who are you going to choose as your familiar?" I asked.

Sabrina said "I think I'll choose a guy. I would want a girl because we could be lifelong friends...but think I can make at least one new friend."

She looked at me with her face full of hope.

I beamed "I'm sure you already have."

The ceremony ended with the headmistress saying this "Please proceed to the demon dorm and choose your familiar by the end of the day."

I got up and left to go pick my familiar with Sabrina right behind me. It was packed. Everyone was rushing to get to the demon dorms. What a bother. I quickly turn around and ask Sabrina "Do you mind if we take a portal? Everyone is rushing to find a familiar and I'm not fond of crowds."

"Sure," She gushed and turned a bright blue,"I've never teleported before." I told her to hold on and I quickly conjured up a vortex. She grabbed my hand and we went through, both of us excited to see the choices awaiting us.

Maybe I'll find what I'm looking for here.
