Phases.
Everyone goes through them. Whether it's the scene phase you go through where you listen to SayWeCanFly and Abandon All Ships 24/7 or if it's the 'I'm gonna wear leggings as pants because boys like it' phase. Point is, we all go through phases of our lives where we hold certain things to high levels of importance, whether that's you holding scene music at a high regard or boys. For some of us, we go through phases of idolization where we choose to idolize a singular object or person; usually a parent. And nine times out of ten, our parents do something to disappoint us and, eventually, we grow out of idolizing them to realize that they are only human beings.
The idea that that one mistake or decision they made could change your entire perception of them is one I know far too well.
Last year I came out to California because there was a secret my parents had kept from me; a secret that made my entire world come crashing down...among others. It was at that exact moment that the whole 'my parents are heroes' thing stopped and they became regular people who, like me, made stupid decisions and ones they weren't proud of; albeit to protect me. In that moment, I had nobody to look up to and try to mould myself after, and was lost. Then I met my real mother and, she too, was quick to lose her spot as my new hero because she wasn't who I wanted her to be. In a way, I'm lucky that I deidolized my parents at the time that I did because it helped me grow up.
But sometimes, sometimes we're forced to deidolize our parents at a younger age and grow up faster than we could've ever hoped to.
Depending on the person, this could either be good or bad. But, surely, I knew it to be bad. A bad of epic proportions; a type of bad that only Andrew Gold could bring about.
And on that clear Wednesday morning, the bad began with a call....
"You have got to be kidding me!" I could hear a deep yell but decided against reacting to it. My bed was far to comfortable and the position I was in made me envious that It would most likely never happen again. I dug a fingernail into the arm draped around me and felt that hand clench slightly.
"How are you guys still asleep?" I opened one eye and instantly shut it. If I just pretended not to see him, I wouldn't have to answer.
"Try not to breath so hard" Andrew's low voice sounded in my ear and I did everything I could not to roll my eyes.
The sound of angry footsteps got closer and soon, I felt a presence over my head.
"You guys are terrible actors. Harper, I can see you blinking!" Ethan hissed and I let out a slight bubble of laughter.
"Damn it, Harper! Third time you've screwed up this week" Andrew groaned taking his arm off of me and throwing the sheets off his body.
"Dude, your physique is marvelous" Ethan smiled as Andrew pulled a pair of basketball shorts over his boxer briefs.
"No" was all Andrew muttered.
"You don't even know what I was going to say!"
"You were going to ask me for something and my answer is no" With that, he made his way out to the hallway and threw the bathroom door closed.
"Hey, Harvard" Ethan gave me a nervous grin and put his hands inside his back pockets.
"Hey, Ethan" I mumbled getting out of the bed as Ethan averted his eyes, "It's a tank top and shorts, not a bra and underwear"
