As soon as the sound of hooves ceased, and the trees stopped moving, I no longer was in motion. No more waiting, my time is now. As soon as my toes hit the grass, I was off. Though out of breath and suffering from dehydration and sleep deprivation, my feet guide me through the trees, focusing only on what was ahead.
The forest just outside of Joetsu is filled with fallen trees and vines. Every jump drained me more and more of what little energy I had left. Since yesterday's sunrise, my bottom has been stuck in a leather saddle.
As I passed the last set of trees and bushes, the castle finally came into view and it looks more beautiful than ever. Soon it was just open pasture keeping me from him.
Eventually, I made it into the heart of the city. Even at dusk, the marketplace was thriving. I swerve around people and fruit stands. I pass many men trying to sell me clothing or jewels. Until someone familiar meets me.
"Miss Y/N! You're finally back! Oh, I've waited for your return for far too long. Did you just get back?"
I spin around, dust rising under my feet while I look down. Standing for the first time in two days, I feel all the pain in my thighs and arms from gripping onto my horse.
"You look dirty..." they giggle at me.
"Suki," I force my breath to calm. " I-yes I'm very dirty. I've been riding Sakuma for days, my apologies, you shouldn't have to see me like this. I'll return in the morning and I'll look more like myself. But right now I got to go, dear!"
Geez Suki does a fine job speaking her mind without hesitation. I'm well aware I probably look terrible. Riding through the woods filled with bugs and flying mud.
"But wait! I missed you," the disappointed was clear in her low voice. She's a sweetheart, really.
My feet were still moving fast as I rush through the center of the market place. The whole city is on a whole different level of vibing.
Everyone knew I was back. I could hear my name being spoken by women and men. My name had spread through the market place faster than I had.
Many young children around the ages of 3 to 5 reach their arms up saying my name excitedly.
"Y/N!"
"Mom. It's Y/N! She's back in town, mom!"
"Yyyyy/nnnnn!!"
My hands waved and my lips parted as I gave every kid a wishful smile, but my rush was recognizable and anyone could guess why.
"I'm sorry, I just got into town, I'll see you later, I promise!"
And to others, my hands gently graze their arms as they receive a whisper that floats off with the wind as soon as it was said, something secretive.
"I'm back for good," I beem.
The voices were long behind me at this point. The summer sun was getting lower and lower on the horizon, soon it would be dark. I couldn't believe it was already sunset.
My feet didn't know why they were running, only because they had been in motion for so long, did they continue with what felt most natural.
I keep finding myself running back to you. Time and time again.
The large white doors of Kasugayama castle were bright. Brighter than the refection of the sunrise on a flat body of water.
Those doors, I've walked through so many times before, so why do I feel so nervous entering them again? I shouldn't have to worry, yet I do. Why do I feel this time is different, like I won't walk out the same?
