Konnor had asked me to hang out with him today. He wanted to meet up and go for a bike ride by the lake. And, not realizing I would probably regret this decision later, I said yes.

At the moment I was riding my bike down the street. I turned a corner and rode down to Konnor's neighborhood. He was already waiting for me, and as soon as he saw me he took off. "Wait up!" I said, and Konnor replied with "Catch me if you can!" I laughed, and the looked in the street. No cars that I could see, so I drove out in the street and sped past Konnor. When I was ahead of him, I crossed back into the sidewalk.

"Hey, that's not fair!" Konnor said, and then he did the exact same thing I had just done. He crossed back ahead of me, and I did the same thing. Soon, though, there were too many cars, so I stayed ahead of Konnor and he stayed behind me. We made it to the lake, and we both parked our bikes and sat on a bench next to the lake, staring out over the water.

"Sometimes I just wonder why. Why are we here. What's the purpose of life? I know a lot of people think about this, but in the subject of love. Since I'm with you, I just thought I should ask. Is it to break hearts? Or mend broken ones?" Konnor asked. "That's deep." I said, looking at the blue water. So deep and mysterious. Beautiful on top, but underneath the surface might be something you didn't want to mess with. Maybe like people. On top, they seemed nice. Good looking, popular, friendly. But get to know them and they're like the alligators in the lake. Mess with them and you get hurt.

"Cheyenne?" Konnor asked, looking at me. "Yeah?" I said, snapping myself out of that trance. "Oh. I think it depends on the purpose. You've seen people at school. Some were born to be in a serious relationship and to help people. Others were born to break hearts and hurt people." "Very true." Konnor said, then suddenly turns to me, "What about me? What if I was born to break hearts and I'm just waiting to break yours?" "Konnor, that's not true." I said. He smiled, then looked back out at the water. I found myself staring at him, and suddenly his hand touched mine. We sat in silence, holding hands.

"Cheyenne, even if I was born to break hearts I promise I won't break yours." Konnor said. "I won't either. Promise." I say. When I said this, I knew this was a promise I could keep.
