I dance in my room, I was so happy!! I couldn't wake my parents, so in my mind I glided elegantly across the room. But really I just did the sprinkler. I'd only known him for a few hours, yet it felt like years. I knew it was a little over dramatic, but still. Before I went to sleep, I set a reminder to call Hannah Kate tomorrow, and slowly I drifted off into a happy sleep full of dreams of love.
"IM INTO YOU, BABY NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT IM NNOOTT INTO YOU!! I SHOULD BE OVER ALL THE BUTTERFLIES..." That was Hannah Kate and I shrieking to "Still Into You" by Paramore. When we were finished, we collapsed on my bed laughing and gasping for breath. "I love that song." I said. "Yes, but not as much as I am loving this story! Tell me again." I sighed. "Again? Well basically I told him everything you already know and he excepted me. Just like you." Her green eyes danced with mischief. "You liiiike him don't you?" She smiled. "DO NOT!!" I replied childishly. "You do! You do like him!" I covered my ears. "Do not do not do not!" We kept this childish game up for about a few minutes and finally we just gave up. "Fine. Maybe I do have a little...little crush on him." She threw her hands up in the air in victory. "Ha! I KNEW it!! Hahaha! You guys are gonna go out and grow up and make the most beautiful children and..." "Whoa whoa whoa! Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We've only known each other for 24 hours." She took a deep breath and nodded. "Your right." I smiled. "But still, with his features and bone structure and your personality your children will be..." Before she could continue I shoved her back on the bed while she laughed her head off. Oh best friends.
I walked down the hallway with my head down, same as always. I went to my locker secretly hoping Jake would stop by and try to scare me. I got my stuff out slowly, getting ready for the pounce. I felt a light tap on my shoulder. Not what I was expecting, but okay. "Hey Jake what's..." It wasn't Jake. It was HK. "Whoops, sorry HK. Thought you were someone else. What's go..." Before I could finish she grabbed me and took off. I wasn't really looking where we were headed, I was just trying not to hurt the people Hannah Kate was blowing through. Before I knew it, we were in a janitors closet. "Um, pardon my French, but WHAT IN THE NAME OF ANNE FRANK IS GOING ON HERE!!" She whimpered. "Not even your hilarious vocabulary is going to make this better." My eyebrows knit together. "What's going on?" I ask again, quieter but with more firmness. "Didn't... didn't you see them?" I rolled my eyes. "I don't see anyone in the hallways. Remember? No eye contact." I made motions towards my eyes. "Well you should have at least heard about it." I was getting frustrated. "You know your my only friend. Now cut to the chase. There's something your not telling me and I hate to break it to you, but your gonna have to be the bairrer of bad news." She whimpered again. "Ok. J-Jake h-h-as a g-girlfriend. And it's v-v-v." She couldn't finish. My heart broke into a million pieces. "Violet?" I ask the dreaded question. She nods and all of a sudden starts bawling. She crystal into my shoulder saying, "I-I'm sorry. I'm s-so sorry!" I didn't comfort her. I stood as still as a statue. When she was done she came off me and wiped her nose. "Are you going to say something?" I just turned around and left. I walked through the halls, eyes straight ahead instead of on the floor. And sure enough, I see Jake with his arm that was usually around me around her. I see them and quickly avert my eyes. I feel Jakes eyes on me but don't meet them. As I brush past them Violet says, "Skunk bag." Tears were prickling my eyes. I couldn't do it, I just couldn't.
I ran down the halls, busting through people, out the doors, and took off. I didn't know where I was going, just that I had to run. So I did. My long legs carried me surprisingly swiftly to the woods behind the school. I ran on the trail till I felt I had run far enough to be away from the world for now. I found a big tree and climbed. I climbed and climbed till I reached the top. I looked through some branches, and say the school a good distance away. I settled on a tree limb, and just bawled. I sobbed and sobbed till I was all teared out. I sat there, and heard the dismissal bell off in the distance. I didn't move an inch. After a few minutes, I heard some distant voices. My ears picked up a conversation between a boy and a girl. "Katie! Uh, where could she be?" That was Hannah Kate's voice, I knew it for sure. "Are you sure she's even back here?" Well Jakes voice wasn't one I'd be expecting. "Yes, I think I saw her." "You think?" I could hear her sigh. "Even if I didn't, I know whenever Katie's upset and wants to be alone, she goes out into the woods, finds herself a good tree, and climbs it." It was true. And kind of scary that she knew that. "Katie! Come on! Let's talk about this!" I could tell Hannah Kate probably rolled her eyes. "She's not gonna respond to you, idiot. Your the one who drove her out here." "Who will she respond to then. You?" There was a smile in her voice. "Yes. Who else would know how to get her down?" There were really close now. I was careful to slow my breathing and not move. "And how would that be?" I smiled. Only one thing got me down. I could tell she was kind of embarrassed. "Well, you kind of have to wait a few hours before you can get her down." They were right below me now. "A few hours?!" Jake asked in disbelief.
They stopped and were facing each other. Hannah Kate rubbed her arm. "You kinda have to tempt her with food to get her down. Wait, look!" Crap! My shoes left a mark on the trail. "That's Katie's shoe mark!" Jake looked at her like she had a third eyeball. "Okay, A) who else would come back here and B) she's been wearing the same kind of sneakers since she was five. I'm not nuts. Look, it points towards this tree." Both their eyes follow my big tree up to the top and see me sitting there. HK clutches her heart. "Thank goodness!" Jake rolled his eyes. "Yeah, but how are we supposed to get her down smart one? A few more hours and it will be dark." She tapped her chin. "Maybe she'll fall?" He sighed. "How long has she been climbing trees?" "10 years." She replied proudly. Jake scaled the tree. "She won't fall then. She's more experienced than me, and that's sayin something."
He put his foot on the lowest branch and started climbing. "And what do you think your doing?" "Baking a cake." His voice drips with sarcasm. "Why are you climbing? Shouldn't we think about it?" He grunted in effort as he pulled himself up a bit. "I did. Look at it logically. We have a 10 year experienced climber on top of a tree with only one for sure way to get her down, and that'll take forever. We have a 5 year experienced climber on the ground. You can check my math, but the way I see it, there's only one solution. Can't get her down, so we go up." She thought about it as Jake grunted some more. "Couldn't we call the fire department?" He was already half way up. "To late for that. Besides, this is better." It took way longer than it took me, but finally, bit by bit, and with quite a few statements from Hannah Kate, he made it to a branch across from me. He's breathing heavily and sweat beads are forming on his fore head. He looks at me, and gives a breathy, "Hey." I smile a little. "Your nuts." He gives me a look that screams, seriously.? "Really? I'm not the one who did this voluntarily." I shrugged my shoulders. This was true. "We need to talk about this." I looked at the school in the distance. "There's nothing to say. You chose her. I'm over it." I points to my face. "Your puffy eyes say differently." Instinctively, I lifted my hand to my eyes to feel that they were indeed swollen with old tears. "So?"
He sighed. "So... I didn't choose her. She chose me, and I decided to say yes. Mostly because of peer pressure. After what you told me, I wanted to see for myself." I stared him right in the eye. "You know she called me a skunk bag when you walked by?" He nodded. "Yes. I scolded her and she seemed truly sorry. Look, I promise she won't touch you." I looked at him. "Whatever." He lifted his eyebrows. "We good?" I shrugged. "I guess." He smiled his dazzling smile and started down. He was extra careful not to fall, something I stopped having to worry about a few years back. After about ten minutes he reaches the bottom and HK said something along the lines of, "Took you long enough." He stared her down. "I'd like to see any one go down a tree that size faster than that." Hannah Kate smirked. "Watch and learn pretty boy." She points to me, cups her hands around her mouth, and calls, "Show this know it all what you got master tree climber." I nodded and went at my fastest pace. I was down in about two minutes. He stared at me in awe. "Ok, any one else except for Katie." And I smiled my dazzling smile.
