Alexis's pov

The guy glared at me crossly and I looked up at DJ pleadingly, only to find him staring amusingly at the other boy. Alarm bells went off in my head as I silently begged Destiny with my eyes not to do or say whatever the hell was going on in his twisted head. I bit my tongue when I failed miserably.

"So, I take it you're Mary," DJ said, "congratulations, I bet you're no longer a virgin." He extended his hand to the guy, knowing full well that he wasn't going to shake it.

I face palmed myself as I wished I could just disappear. Instead of expressing his anger on DJ, the asshole turned on me. There were probably two reasons for that: one, I'm the one who caused this in the first place and two, Destiny was way bigger than the little guy so he couldn't possibly look to take him on.

"My name is Steve you little bitch!" He said, stepping threateningly at me.

I was just blinking in mild surprise at his bravery. Then I thought, he has no idea what angry DJ can do if someone oversteps with me. He was about to say something else but was cut off when his head was roughly pulled backwards. I looked up to find Destiny with a fist full of Steve's curly brown hair clutched tightly.

"Apologize to her right now before I do something only you will regret later," DJ said in a really calm voice but I could tell he was anything but calm based on his body language.

The guy winced in pain as he angled his head to get away from DJ. "F'CK you!" He screamed like the idiot I now realize he is.

Destiny laughed as he yanked harder at the guy's hair, making him fall to his knees. I looked around, starting to panic. I did not want a crowd to gather or the campus securities to be alerted so I started to plead with my best friend.

"Destiny, leave him alone." I said, "he's not worth it."

He just exhaled through his nose and narrowed his eyes at the guy. I stepped closer to him, placing my hands on his shoulders. "Oh come on DJ! I'm hungry. Let's go get some pizza or something and leave this jerk alone."

He just tugged at the poor guy's hair one last time and would probably do it again if a lone tear drop didn't make its way from one of Steve's eyes.

"Fine." Destiny finally said. He pushed the guys head as he let go and walked off, but not without another one of his witty insults. "Ever heard of hair oil bro? You're in desperate need of some."

He brushed off his hands as he walked and turned to me, "any hand sanitizer?" He asked.

I didn't know if I should be mad at him or not. I mean, he was standing up for me, but he made the poor dude cry. I was glad he was there for me, but also a bit pissed that he had to use what I said earlier against the poor dude. I mean, I lied but I apologized. Why did he have to bring it back up again?

What happened a while ago just showed exactly how DJ proves a point. He's just not the type to brag about what he'll do or not. He just does it. Like that one time, in our first semester here. Ashley, one of the fake Barbie dolls, accused him of being gay just because he had a girl for a best friend. He took her out on a date. He didn't come home that night and heaven knows what happened. I for one don't even want to know. All I know is, poor Ashley still has a crush on him after all those years.

I was still mad at him when he bought me pizza on our way to the park. That was because he refused to let me have anything sweet. He knows about my addiction. But some people are just too hard to stay mad at. He bought me some balloons and a Tom and Jerry locket from a guy selling toys at the entrance to the park.

We spent some time playing with a bunch of kids and their pets and then went to lay down on the grass under a tree. It felt just like old times when we were younger and it was just us, as we stared into the partly cloudy sky, enjoying each other's company.

"Alexis?"

"Mmhm?"

"You okay?"

"Sure, are you?"

---Pause.

I became a little curious at his sudden silence and turned to look at my bestie only to find him staring at me with suspicion. "What?" I asked, confused.

He sighed and sat up, eyes still on me. "What's going on Lexi?"

Oh shit. Here we go. I really do not want to have this conversation. Not here. Not now. Ugh!

"What do you mean? Nothing's going on." I looked everywhere else but at DJ and I could tell that I was starting to annoy him again.

"Okay. Fine." He said, "it's like I don't know you anymore." He spoke under his breath but I heard.

"Of course you do," I said laughing lightly. "It's not like I've changed or anything."

"Not from where I'm standing." Destiny argued, "we haven't had a decent lunch together in a while now, you're going out and sleeping around, and it seems we haven't had a normal talk in what feels like years. That is without trying to shout each other's ears off."

"And suddenly it's my fault!" I snapped. He started it this time.

"Oh!" DJ yelled, "so I'm the one who has been ignoring me all this time."

I fisted my hands and clenched my teeth angrily. I glared at DJ with all the frustration I could muster, but I knew he was right. Eventually, I caved in with a sigh. I looked away from my best friend and blinked sadly at the grass below me.

"I'm trying to get away," I said softly. "Away from the past, y'know. I need to start living like should have ever since that day. I want to let my hair down and breath finally. To enjoy myself and be a free single woman.

I just wish things were back to normal. Back to the way it was before he came along and spoiled everything."

When I was done talking, I looked up at Destiny and found him nodding his head in understanding. A smile crept on my face and I crawled into his arms which he opened for me.

"I get it," replied DJ after a while "but you should have just told me in the first place. You had me so damn worried."

"I'm-" I was about to apologise again when he cut me off.

"Sssshhhhh. It's okay. I know."
