Dean is Mean

Rachel and I walked out of history together to the cafeteria talking about Batman.

"So... Batman doesn't have a sore throat?" she asked.

I shook my head. "No, he doesn't."

Once we entered the cafeteria, I realized that Rachel and I had nowhere to sit. We couldn't sit with Sarah because I wasn't ready to speak to her.

"Why don't we sit with your boyfriend", Rachel suggested as she pointed to the table closest to the lunchline. She pointed to Peter. I slapped her arm.

"He isn't my boyfriend", I snapped. "Look, Stacy Withers is sitting alone. We can sit with her." We walked over to the table next to Peter's and greeted Stacy Withers, the head of the school paper.

"So, what brings you to my table?" she asked with a pen and notepad in her hands.

"We just wanted to sit with you", Rachel answered.

"Uh huh. Rachel, right? What did you do before you came to Jurisdiction High?"

"I did charity work in San Francisco with my friends."

Stacy nodded her head and wrote something on her notepad. "Do you do any charity work here?"

"No..."

"Interesting..."

I slumped in my chair. I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned around. I was inches away from perfect.

"Hey, Natalie", said Peter flashing me his adorable smile. The pterodactyls in my stomach were flying around.

"Hey, Peter. What's up?" I tried to sound like he didn't affect me. But he did.

"Just wanted to say hi to my favorite girl", he said.

I giggled. It was a very ugly giggle but I couldn't take it back.

"Well, I'll see you around, Natalie." I nodded. The way he says my name, makes me melt.

There was laughter that interrupted my thoughts, from Peter's friends.

"Natalie, you're drooling", whispered Rachel.

I grabbed one of Stacy's napkins and wiped my moist chin. I am an embarrassment to womankind. Drooling in front of Peter and his friends is the stupidest thing I ever did.

How can Peter affect me like this? I mean, is this normal?

"This is gold. Natalie drools in front of star quarterback. Looks like I have a front page story", snickered Stacy.

I rolled my eyes. I hate school newspapers.

"Natalie!" yelled my mother as I walked in the house. She hugged me and I stood there, ready to hear what here plans are for me.

"What now, mom? Are we going to go see the Fray or some other band?" I chuckled.

"No. Your dad wants us to go to the set today. He said that his new actor, Bean O'Brien is going to show up", she sang.

I laughed. "You mean Dean O'Brien?"

"Yeah, yeah. Same thing. Are you coming?"

"Definitely, let's go!" I couldn't wait to go see Dean. He is my ticket to Brielle becoming my slave for the rest of the year. Imagine: Brielle carrying my books. Brielle feeding me. Brielle doing my nails. Brielle doing my homework... Actually, I think I should stick to doing my homework.

"When Dean shows up, I want you to be on your best behavior", my dad demanded.

"I'll make sure Natalie behaves", my mother reassured.

"I was talking about you, Janet."

I laughed as we sat in the chairs with our names on them. The set was a convenient store where Dean and Bryan's characters meet. Dean comes in drunk and tries to buy a case of beer but Bryan's character talks some sense into him. Bryan takes Dean home after he passes out at the store, and then Bryan's character takes Dean to one of his AA meetings.

Speaking of Bryan...

"Hey, Natalie", greeted the star. He was wearing a blue button up shirt and black jeans.

"Hey, Bryan. Ready to meet your co star?"

He shrugged. "I guess so. As long as he isn't conceited, we can become friends."

"You mean, as long as he isn't anything like you, you guys can become friends."

Bryan winked. "Exactly."

"Guys, this is Dean", my dad said. I looked at the guy that my dad had his arm around. He was smiling but his eyes told a different story. Like, there was something bothering him.

My mother held out her hand and Dean politely shook it."Pleasure to meet you. My daughter, Natalie, was dying to meet you."

I scrunched up my nose at my mother's lie. Bryan snickered beside me.

"Well, I love all of my fans", Dean said.

"I have to go get George Sandy's hand out of a vase. You kids can talk amongst yourselves", my dad said as he scurried off to the dressing rooms.

"Oo, George Sandy! See you guys later!" my mother shrieked as she sped towards the direction my dad went.

There was an awkward silence between the three of us. Dean swayed side to side. Bryan stared at my grey Vans. I watched as the crew ran around the room, trying to get ready to shoot the next scene.

"So, Dean. What's your profession?" Bryan asked. I laughed at his stupid joke.

"Wow. You think you're funny, huh? Why don't you become a stand up comedian? Especially since you suck at acting", Dean snapped back at Bryan. Bryan and I were shocked. Our eyes looked like an owl's. I couldn't believe he said what he said. He's a... dick.

"I was kidding. What's your fucking problem?" Bryan's whole body tensed up.

"My problem is that everyone wants to joke around. Why can't one person I meet be fucking serious for once?" Was it wrong to feel bad for Dean? Even though he snapped at poor Bryan? His eyes met mine and I thought my heart dropped. "And what are you staring at?"

A hurt boy.

"Sorry." I fixed my eyes to the fake plant to the left of him.

"Whatever. I'm going to my dressing room." Dean stormed off. I guess it's going to be a huge challenge to become friends Dean. I don't even know how with him being such a dick.

"I don't like him", Bryan said as he sat in the chair next to me.

"Everyone deserves another chance."
