Several people were already in the mess hall, which was about four times the size of the room they had been given. There were six tables in total. Each one could seat about eight people. The tables had long benches for sitting. As he and Elincia entered the room, all conversation ceased as everyone turned to stare at them.
Caspian suddenly felt distinctly uncomfortable.
"Maybe coming down here to get breakfast wasn't a good idea," he said. Elincia didn't say anything, but she did nod once.
Since they were already there, it wasn't like they could just turn around and walk out without looking suspicious. Caspian and Elincia walked past the tables, perfectly aware of the eyes trailing after them. He wouldn't say there was something accusing in the looks they got. However, he also couldn't help but feel like many of those people were amused.
It was as they were passing one table with a couple of men that someone decided to wolf whistle.
"Hey! I heard you two were going at it last night! Was she a good ride, or did you let her ride you?"
As the men at the table laughed, an intense burst of embarrassment washed over him through the bond, causing his own cheeks to become a startling shade of scarlet. He glanced at Elincia, whose face had become so red that even her ears were boiling hot. Seeing this made a strange feeling well up inside of his chest. The desire to protect Elincia from the shameful remarks made by that man made him turn around.
"She's definitely better than anyone you'll ever sleep with," Caspian remarked before taking Elincia by the hand and pulling her along. They went all the way to the back, where a buffet of food awaited them. He grabbed two trays, one for him and one for Elincia, and then grabbed some plates and utensils.
"I'm sorry about that," he apologized through the bond.
"Huh? Oh, no. Please don't worry about that. I'm glad you said something to him."
Caspian began filling his plate with primarily meats. He placed several sausages on his plate, some bacon, and then filled the last portion with eggs. After thinking about it for a moment, he also grabbed a bowl of fruit. It wasn't good to eat just meat and eggs, after all. Unlike him, Elincia was stacking her plate up with fried toast, which was bread soaked in eggs and milk that was then fried. He shook his head when he saw her neatly stack six pieces on her plate and then lather it in syrup.
"Make sure you also grab some meat for protein," he said.
"I-I know that," Elincia muttered as she grabbed one sausage. She was about to move on when she saw his expression, paused, and then grabbed another one. He sighed but didn't say anything.
As they were looking for a seat, Caspian saw that the man who'd spoken to them so crassly was being harassed by his friends. It seemed his words had caused them to laugh at their companion. While the man glared at him, Caspian ignored him like he was one of those students who made fun of him at the Arcadia's Knight Academy.
Breakfast was a little quiet and awkward. He and Elincia didn't speak, not even through their bond. It wasn't that they didn't want to, but the feeling of so many eyes on them made them too nervous to say anything. Caspian couldn't help but wonder how everyone seemed to have discovered that he and Elincia had slept together last night. They hadn't been very loud. In fact, because they made love slowly, they hadn't been loud at all. Were the walls just that thin? No, walls in a Peacekeer's headquarters were supposed to be thick for protection. Could someone have told them?
Told them...
Told...
"Cassidy," he and Elincia thought at the same time. They looked at each other, and then awkwardly smiled.
