It took three days to reach Fas Sheras, but that was not because the group didn't want to hurry. Valen had decided they were going to move slowly. Caspian was sure that part of the reason was because of Dranor, the traitor elf who had been exiled for joining the rebellion that forced Elincia to leave her home. It was certainly hard to trust a known traitor.
However, he was sure that the biggest reason was because Valen wanted to speak with Elincia.
"Not a lot has changed since you've been gone," Valen said as he walked ahead of Caspian, traveling alongside Elincia, who paid rapt attention to the man. "After the rebellion, His Majesty Valucus and Her Majesty Lenismare put their all into rebuilding the kingdom. They became a lot stricter as well. I believe the rebellion taught them a hard lesson, one they had forgotten a long time ago. The loss of you, their daughter, made them remember."
"Lesson?" Elincia tilted her head. "What lesson did it teach them?"
While the smile Valen gave Elincia was hard, it was not unkind. "That one cannot afford to be too soft in this world. Those who are soft are weak, and when you are in a position of power like they are, being soft is a weakness that you cannot afford." When he saw how Elincia's ears and shoulders drooped, he hurriedly backtracked. "Please do not let yourself be downtrodden. The king and queen are still alive, and now that you have returned, they will be overjoyed to discover that you are still alive."
"Yes. I hope so," Elincia murmured. Valen smiled before once again changing the topic to food, and Elincia paid just as much attention as she had during the previous conversation.
Caspian was scowling as he walked behind them. He glared a hole in Valen's head, wishing he could project magical beams from his eyes. It had been quite a while since he disliked anyone this intensely. Not since that stupid brat in Flos had buried her face in Elincia's boobs had he felt this insanely angry. Who did this old fart think he was?!
"Your jealousy is showing," a voice said beside him.
Caspian's scowl grew even more fierce as he glared at Christo, who walked beside him with his hands behind his head. Cassidy was walking on Christo's other side. She was staring at the ground, making sure not to trip over any bushes or roots. She'd already done so about six times in the past two days.
"I am not jealous!" Caspian grumbled.
"I have never seen a man more envious than you," Erica said from his other side. Caspian whipped around to scowl her next, but she just grinned. "You poor dear. Are you really that upset that another man is talking to your woman?"
"I'm not upset," Caspian said through gnashed teeth.
Erica snorted in amusement. "Of course not."
"I personally do not see what you have to be jealous about," Maddison said. She was walking further from the group, probably because she didn't want to be near Erica, but she could hear their conversation just the same. "Aren't you and Elincia connected through that elf marriage bond or whatever? You should be able to feel how much she loves you."
"I've closed the bond off. I don't want her to know what I'm thinking right now."
"Because she'd admonish you for being jealous, right?" Erica sent him a vindictive grin.
If Caspian's scowl could have grown any fiercer, he was sure it would have. Why were all these people messing with him today?
Aside from Erica, Christo, Cassidy, and Maddison, Derek, Tiffania, Collafloore, and Sylvia were all present and walking in the same. The only one who wasn't was Dranor. That was because he was in the middle of an elven formation. While he wasn't in chains because Elincia had forbade it, only a fool would have realized how little they trusted that man. The four elves guarding him had their hands on their swords. It looked like they were ready to strike him down at the slightest provocation.
