Caspian had no idea what Vaculus wanted to speak with them about, but as he and Elincia followed the king of Fas Sheras, they discussed the matter using their bond.
"What do you think he wants to tell us?" asked Elincia.
"I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it's important." Caspian furrowed his brow as he thought about everything that had happened. "A large battle just took place inside of his kingdom. There are many injured and dead. As the king, he'll need to get a total of the casualties and fatalities, discover how many of the enemy was slain, and send out troops to scout the area and make sure there aren't any more enemies. This doesn't include setting up aid stations, getting a rundown of their supplies, and figuring out how to properly distribute them to those who have had their homes destroyed. That he's taking time to speak with us means whatever he has to say is something he believes is more important than all that."
"That's... a lot of stuff he has to do," Elincia admitted. "I guess we'll find out what he has to say soon."
"Yeah..."
Their conversation ended a few minutes later as Vaculus led them into the palace. They didn't go to the throne room where they had first met. Instead, the king led him and Elincia to a small, private meeting chamber.
As expected of an elven room, this one did not contain any decorations like human lounges did. There were a set of divans, but they looked organic, as though they had been made from the tree this palace was built around. About the only thing that seemed inorganic was the cushions, which were obviously made from a type of soft animal hide.
"Sit down, you two," Vaculus said as he took a seat on one of the divans.
Caspian and Elincia did as they were told. Vaculus frowned at them for a moment. The glare on his face took Caspian aback, but then he realized that Elincia's father didn't seem comfortable by how he and his daughter were sitting so close their thighs were touching. No matter how many times the man saw it, no matter whether or not he knew Caspian and Elincia were sexually active, he always remained disgruntled by displays of affection or anything remotely related to intimacy.
The king coughed into his hand. "Elincia, that being you called to fight for you... do you know what she is?"
"Freya?" Elincia said with a shrug. "She's a spirit from the Nordic Clan, who exist within a spirit realm known as Yggdrasil. She's one of the most powerful warrior spirits within the clan and is actually a practitioner of Seidr, which she says is like their form of magic. It's a type of 'shamanism' that concerns discerning the course of fate and working within its structure to bring about change. I'm not really sure what that means, though."
As Elincia told Vaculus what she knew about Freya, the ancient but young-looking king appeared truly befuddled by all this new information. His eyes grew wider the longer Elincia talked. By the time she had finished, the man looked like he was suffering severe constipation.
"Do you mean to tell me you can talk to them?" asked Vaculus.
"Of course." Now it was Elincia's turn to look confused. "According to them, I am their contractor. Since I'm contracted to them, we have a strong telepathic connection, which is what allows me to open a gate to their realm and call upon them when I need to."
Vaculus rubbed his forehead as though he was suffering from a headache, but he sighed and seemed to let go of whatever was troubling him. "Well... it seems you know a lot about these creatures, but I'll tell you about them from the perspective of us elves."
Caspian leaned forward with Elincia as the man said this. It seemed the elves had their own idea on the spirits used by sorceresses and Elincia. Of course they would. Sylvia had become a sorceress and led humanity on a war of freedom against the elves over 1,000 years ago, and this man right here had been around during that time, though he'd been nothing but a young boy when it began.
