Caspian and his group had learned immediately after disposing of Earl Gorossalaine that not only had the man been in the habit of selling slaves, but he had also blackmailed the Peacekeepers of Ashtown into doing his bidding. The men who they had battled and knocked unconscious had been forced to obey him because he had kidnapped their families. Upon learning this, they had freed the wives and children of those Peacekeepers, who thanked them profusely and even offered to help them by providing their group with a carriage that was pulled by a land dragon.
The carriage was nothing spectacular. Being nothing more than a wooden platform with a small wooden wall surrounding three sides along with a tarp made of tanned hide. There was a bench up front for the driver. It looked incredibly basic. The only thing that could be said about the carriage was that they had been provided with a number of pillows and blankets taken from the earl, so at least it was comfortable to sleep in.
"Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker's man
Bake me a cake as fast as you can
Pat it and prick it and mark it with an "E"
Put it in the oven for Sis and me
For Sis and me
For Sis and me
And there will be plenty for Sis and me"
Caspian stared out the back as the carriage rolled along the road. They had long since left the more barren areas of the Dystian Province and were traveling along a mountain pass. All he could see from the small flap that opened and closed from the window was the endless road as it spiraled down across the mountain.
Inside of the carriage with him was Elincia, Erica, Derek, Sylvia, and Tiffania.
Sylvia was sitting on the opposite side of him, leaning against the wooden wall as she stared at him and Elincia with a disapproving frown. She'd been like that ever since she learned about their relationship. He personally didn't see what was so wrong with being in love with each other, but Sylvia had always been the type to believe that the relationship between sorceress and knight was one of pure business.
Of course, it didn't help that Elincia was leaning against him as she slept. In fact, it would be more accurate to say that she was lying on him.
His sorceress lay curled up on his lap like an overly affectionate cat, her head leaning against his shoulder as her breath tickled his neck. He would occasionally feel her ears wiggle as she dreamed. It was also possible for him to see her dreams, but he'd recently learned that he could block those out if he wanted to... which he did. Caspian had no desire to know what she was dreaming about.
The feeling of Elincia's soft butt on his lap was quite pleasant. He had wrapped his arms around her shoulders and waist, holding her close as he kept a blanket wrapped around them both. It was very chilly thanks to the elevation. His breath was coming out in puffs of white.
He and Elincia were not the only ones bundled up; Sylvia was also wrapped in a blanket, as was Derek, who sat in a corner of the carriage looking quite lonely. Christo and Cassidy were not in the carriage, but that was because they were on the driver's bench. He could only see the back of their heads.
