"We are gathered here today to pay our respects to young, 15 year old, Tyler Luca Simmons who passed under unfortunate circumstances. Tyler was a beloved Son, brother and friend to everyone he met. Give him, o Lord, your peace and let your eternal love and light shine upon him." The priest announces.

"Amen." Me and the rest of the congregation say.

"Would Abigail Simmons like to say a few words?" He asks.

I get up from my chair in the front row. I look out at the crowd of family and friends for support and they all give me sad glances. Once I'm up on the stage I take a deep breath and start the speech that I had prepared.

'If I die young bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh uh oh...'

"Hi uhm everyone. So I prepared a speech but I'm not entirely sure how these things work so uhm yeah." I say.

'...Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when
She stands under my colours, oh and
Life ain't always what you think it oughta be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby
The sharp knife of a short life,
Well, I've had just enough time...'

"Tyler was only fifteen when he died on Friday April 27th at Redview hospital. He was born right here in Redview fifteen years ago on January 7th 2003. Tyler was very close to me and will always be. He was my only brother and was taken away from me way too early. I loved him. I loved his little curls in his hair that he would spend way too much time shampooing and washing and brushing."

'...If I die young bury me in satin.
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
The sharp knife of a short life,
Well I've had just enough time...'

"I remember when we were little and I used to treat him like a little Barbie doll. He would fuss and fuss and yell at me. He'd say 'Abigail Simmons! If you don't stop touching my hair right now I'm going to burn all your actual Barbie dolls.' He was my best friend."

'...And I'll be wearing white when I come into your kingdom
I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger
I've never known the lovin' of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand
There's a boy here in town says he'll love me forever
Who would have thought forever could be severed by
The sharp knife of a short life,
Well I've had just enough time...'

"And He was so obsessed with green! I used to tell him that green reminded me of nature and vomit and that I hated both those things. But now as I look at all you wonderful people in your green outfits, I look at all the green ribbons strung along all the trees and I look down at the green dress I'm wearing right now. I'm thinking wow. This the most beautiful colour of them all because my brother loved it."

'...So put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls
What I never did is done
A penny for my thoughts, oh no I'll sell them for a dollar
They're worth so much more after I'm a goner
And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin'
Funny when you're dead how people start listenin'...'

"He was goofy, funny and a beautiful person. He had a beautiful soul and a beautiful personality. I remember when mom came home with him when I was three and I asked 'what's that?' And she said 'it's your little brother' and stuck out my tongue and walked away. At that time I never thought that I would have to say goodbye to him. May his soul rest in peace. I love you Ty. I really do."

'...If I die young bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh (uh oh)
The ballad of a dove
Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket
Save 'em for a time when your really gonna need 'em oh
The sharp knife of a short life,
Well I've had just enough time
So put on your best boys, and I'll wear my pearls'
