A/N: I'm sure from the title many of you can guess that this post may be triggering. I wanted to give a quick warning because I don't want to make bad feelings return for you lovelies. I am writing about Jonghyun and his death as both a tribute and to keep the awareness around mental health and make suicide a topic that we stop shying away from. You are more than welcome to not read if it may harm your mental health, and if you need to talk, please PM me or someone you trust. ❤️
It's been one year since the death of Jonghyun of SHINee. I've mentioned before how SHINee was the first K-pop group that I was ever introduced to. While I didn't follow them extensively, I had a lot of respect for the band, especially Jonghyun. He paved the way for mainstream idols to write their own songs and honestly changed the industry. BTS and many of our favorite groups wouldn't be able to exist/ operate in the way they do without Jonghyun and SHINee.
News of his death hit me hard last year as I realized just how hard idol life was. I worried for the other members of SHINee and for BTS.
As someone who has suffered from depression and suicidal ideation (don't worry, I am in contact with my counselor and this was many months ago), as well as large amounts of anxiety and stress, I can attest to just how hard it is to even admit to yourself that your thoughts are toxic. The thoughts are scary, sometimes they don't feel like your own, and sometimes you don't even know where they came from.
If you ever feel this way, reach out to someone you trust. Whether you have a therapist/ counselor or not, even just reaching out to a friend or family member can make you feel better. And, allow yourself to show your emotions, sometimes when I'm depressed allowing myself to cry makes me feel better.
Take care of yourselves lovelies. Get 8 hours of sleep each night (this is known to help depression), stay hydrated, and don't isolate yourself when you're feeling sad. And, if you need to talk, my PM's are always open. I also have listed many resources/ hotlines in my World Mental Health chapter.
You all mean the world to me and everyone deserves a place on this Earth. No one is insignificant. We all have people who love us, people who look up to us, and people who are waiting for our next update 🙊.
Stay safe and stay shiny
Alyce ❤️
