"You're awfully quiet," Jaiden remarked, curling up on the couch across from their sister with a cup of hot chocolate in their hands. LA definitely wasn't cold enough for hot chocolate, but that had never stopped Jaiden. They were still used to the cold New York winters, and they were desperately missing them at that moment.
"I'm thinking," Eva replied, her gaze remaining fixated on the TV screen in front of her. It was playing reruns of Girl Meets World, probably on Netflix because Eva rarely used cable anymore. Rewatching meant she was sad, and Jaiden had no idea why.
"Thinking about what?"
"Our birthday is coming up, and this is the first time-"
"We haven't been with mom and dad. You could still... go." Jaiden's voice was soft, hesitant, and they glanced shyly at their sister. Eva barely reacted, but the way her head tilted toward her sibling made it clear she was listening. "I mean, they still love you."
"They won't for long. Bea and I are dropping her new song in two days, and they'll hear it. They'll know. And it won't be the same without you, you know that. We've had the same tradition since we were a good good seven."
"But-"
"No, Jai. I'd rather sulk than be with them. Drop it, please." With her words, Eva stood up abruptly, disappearing into her room. Jaiden watched her leave, an idea beginning to form in their head. They were going to have a good birthday, a better birthday than ever before, both of them. Jaiden would make sure of it.
