REAL LIFE!

"So what brings you to me and not your best friend?" Bea's voice was teasing, but her question was genuine, and it mildly threw Eva off as she rolled onto her side to talk to the girl. They were back in the field from the past week, laying on the hood of Bea's car and watching the sunset. Eva sighed, mind whirring with how she was going to explain her situation as vaguely as possible.

"Hanna doesn't get me. She's nice to have around for parties, she nursed me through a number of breakups with some of the worst guys I've ever met, but we're fame friends. Khalil gets me... but in a way that means we share candy and I sleep in his bed when I'm having a breakdown. He's normally who I would go to, but... not today. He's busy... I needed someone who doesn't know me." Her voice was heavy, and her eyes were dull, faded as she stared at the fading sun.

"Well, any secret you have is safe with me. In fact, for every secret you give me, I'll give you one. Sound like a plan?" Bea popped a handful of Reese's Pieces- provided by their spur of the moment stop at a gas station for snacks- into her mouth, raising an eyebrow. Eva laughed, pouring a few Reese's into her hand before shrugging.

"Sure, why not. Can I start with something easy?" Bea nodded, and with a soft sigh, she started, "I have a twin."

"No way." Bea raised an eyebrow, and Eva nodded, taking a sip of her lemonade.

"Yep, their name is Jaiden. I adore them."

"Them?"

"They're nonbinary!" Eva smiled. "Your turn."

"Okay, uh... I have a secret love for cacti."

"I'm gay."

"Really?" Bea tilted her head, and Eva nodded to confirm it. "Me too."

"Never would have seen that one coming, honestly. Okay, uh... I saw my parents yesterday."

"That's a secret?" Bea furrowed her eyebrows, sipping her coffee with pursed lips.

"They... aren't in the public eye. They're back in Washington. I'm here. Jaiden is in New York. We don't talk to them much." Eva shrugged, but the unread emotions in her eyes made it clear she wanted to say more.

"Then how did you-"

"They showed up on my doorstep without warning," she breathed, sitting up and pulling her knees to her chest. "Said they were trying to get to Jaiden, but they wouldn't see our parents and it makes sense... I don't know how to kick them out."

"Just tell them to leave?" Bea suggested, feeling a bit helpless because she didn't know how to help her friend. Acquaintance? Regardless, she didn't have advice for Eva at all. She knew nothing she suggested would be of use, and she wasn't close enough to Eva to pry any more than what she was given.

"I tried. They're having financial issues, I guess? Trying to find a way to get out of it. So ya know, they flew all the way to California to beg their kid for money because the other one wouldn't give them anything. Because my twin is in college. And I'm paying for it because my parents won't. They only talk to us when it's convenient." Eva scoffed, rolling her eyes. After a moment, she got silent. They stewed in the quiet, Eva deep in thought as Bea wracked her brain for ways to help her. Her only idea was to say she was sorry, which wasn't enough to express how upset she was on Eva's behalf.

So they sat in the silence, breathing in the clean air, enjoying the chirp of birds and fluttering of tree branches.
