A month later
Ellie's POV
"I can't believe there's only four months until our baby is here," I said to Nick on our way to work. "Me too," he said, smiling softly. "Yeah. I'm ready to have our little girl in my arms," I said. "She's gonna be beautiful," he said, looking at me and smiling as he parked. "So, we need to think about names and also a baby shower. But we have a few months for that," I said as he looked at his phone. His expression changed slightly. "You alright?" I asked. "Uh, Yeah," He said unconvincingly. I decided to leave it alone. We walked into the building and quietly got onto the elevator. "So, uh, I was thinking, and I think we should go out to dinner sometime soon," I suggested, tired of the quiet. He nodded without smiling, which was quite unusual. I stopped the elevator. "Nick, are you alright?" I asked again. "I told you I'm fine," he said. I turned and looked at him. "No, you're not. You saw something on your phone and whatever it was completely changed your mood. You know you can tell me anything, right?" I said. He sighed. "Maybe I don't want to talk about it," he said. "Fine," I said, upset by his response. I turned the elevator back on and the doors soon opened. Nick and I got out, not talking to each other. "Good morning, guys," Tim said. I just looked at him, hoping he would pick up on my mood but not ask. He started to look confused. "What's up with you two?" He asked. "I don't want to talk about it, and neither does Nick," I said. He looked even more confused but turned back to his desk. "Ellie suddenly got in a bad mood in the elevator," Nick said. "Because you won't talk to me and tell me what's wrong. You got into some kind of mood on the way into the building but you won't tell me why. I'm just trying to be nice and offer you a chance to talk but you blew me off in a very rude way," I said. He rolled his eyes and sat at his desk. Everyone quickly immersed themselves into their work. Nick's phone kept going off until he put it on silent, but he eventually got so frustrated with it that he dropped it in his trash bin beside his desk with a loud grunt. "Torres?" Gibbs said. "What?" He replied. "Follow me," Gibbs said, standing up and walking towards the elevator. Nick got up and followed him, not even glancing at me as he walked by.
Gibbs's POV
I stepped into the elevator, Torres behind me. It started moving but i stopped it quickly. "Torres, what is going on with you?" I said, facing him. "Nothing!" He said fiercely. "Then fix your attitude," I said. He rolled his eyes and turned away. I pushed his shoulder so he was facing me again. "Whatever it is, I can find out. So you either fix your attitude, talk to Sloane, or talk to Ellie about what's wrong," I whispered, making sure to get in his face. "Fine, I'll talk to Ellie when we get off," he said. "Take her to lunch and tell her. I don't want you working while you're frustrated," I said. He nodded and turned to face forward and turned the elevator back on.
Ellie's POV
Nick must have something going on that's serious. I knew it was just my hormones, but him not even glancing at me, him pushing me away and not even apologizing, it all hurt a lot. I held back the tears and pulled out a bag of ketchup and prawn chips. I felt my eyes getting redder as I ate them, but it wasn't because I missed Reeves this time.
When Nick walked back into the bullpen, he sat at his desk and pulled his phone out of the garbage. I received a text a few minutes later.
NT- I'm sorry
EB- it would mean a hell of a lot more if you'd say to my face
NT- Lets go out to lunch?
EB- will Gibbs even let us?
NT-Yeah. He told me we could already
EB- fine. When do we leave?
NT- now?
EB- ok
"Gibbs, I'm gonna do that, uh, thing," Nick said, approaching Gibbs's desk. "Do it right," he said. Nick walked over and I joined him on the way to the elevator. I stood next to him silently, and I stayed quiet until we got to the diner. "Ellie, I'm sorry for earlier," he said. "Okay," i said. "I, uh, it's just really hard for me to talk about what happened," he said. "Well, whenever you want to talk I'm here for you," I said. "Uh, well, today, twenty years ago, my sister got married to my brother-in-law. Every year since the accident, I feel like it's my fault he's gone and she doesn't have anyone to share her anniversary with. She keeps texting me and asking me to come over for dinner, that it's not my fault, but it is. I was undercover, I was made, and whoever found out I was an American fed found them and killed him. It's my fault. I can't face her and Amanda today," he confessed. "I know you won't like it if I try to convince you it's not your fault, but I think you should go over there. I'll be okay tonight if you go. It could help you feel better," I said. He sighed. "Fine, but only because you won't stop telling me to go until I agree," he said. I smiled as he texted Lucia, telling her he was coming. "She says you should come, too. She hasn't seen you since we got together," he said. "Okay, I'll tag along I guess," I said. He smiled and texted her.
Dinner
We walked into Lucia's apartment and were greeted by Nick's niece, Amanda. "Uncle Nick!" She said, hugging him. "Hey, Amanda," He said. "Guys, this is Ellie, my girlfriend," he said. The girls took turns shaking my hand. "It's very nice to meet you," I said. "You, too," they said. "So, Nick, uh, how long has this been going on?" Lucia asked. "About five months officially," he said. "And unofficially?" She asked. "We've liked each other for a year or two," he said. She smiled. "Well, it's very nice to see my brother happy," Lucia said to me. I smiled.
We ate dinner and I mostly sat quietly while Nick talked to his family members. Eventually, Nick and I had to leave. He hugged his sister for a while before we left. "I'm sorry," I heard him say softly while he hugged her. "It's okay. I don't blame you," she replied. He hugged Amanda as well.
The drove home was quiet. We got to my apartment and got ready for bed. As I was getting ready to climb in bed, Nick grabbed my arm. "I love you, Ellie. You know that? I love you so, so, much," he said, pulling me closer and kissing me softly. "I love you, too Nick. More than you could imagine,"
