"Nick, get up," I said, nudging my fiancé. "What?" He woke up quickly. "Are you alright?" He asked. "Nick, I think my water just broke," I said. "Are you sure?" He said. "Well I went to the bathroom and was heading back to bed when I felt a gush and now I'm standing in a puddle of liquid," I explained hastily. "Okay. Just stay calm. Do you have a hospital bag packed?" He said, not sounding too calm himself. "I have a little bit of one, but I'm not done with it," i replied. I started adding more stuff to the bag after finding it. "I'll go start the car," Nick said after getting dressed.
Soon after, we were driving to the hospital. That's when the first contraction came.
"Ow," i tensed up. It wasn't the worst pain, but it wasn't in the best places. Nick reached over and grabbed my hand. "Our princess is coming," he said softly when I relaxed. I smiled. He always looked so excited when he talked about this moment finally coming.
We finally pulled into the hospital parking lot and walked in. We told the receptionist what happened and she pointed us in the right direction. Soon, I was being checked for signs of labor.
"Ellie, it looks like you are two centimeters dilated," the nurse said. "Is that good?" Nick asked me quietly while the nurse checked some other things. "Yes. It means that I am eight centimeters away from pushing," I explained. "I will be back soon to hook you up to your IVs," the nurse said as she walked out.
"Centimeters?" Nick asked me. "You've never heard any of this stuff?" I asked. He shook his head. "It means my vagina hole has gotten bigger by two centimeters. The bigger it gets, the easier it is for the baby to come out. We just have to wait until I hit ten centimeters," I explained. "Oh lord. I feel bad for you women," he said. I laughed.
The nurse walked back in and hooked me up to my IVs and the devices to monitor the baby. "You are getting an epidural, correct?" She asked. "Yes," I said.
Then came more explaining after she left. "What's an epidural?" Nick asked. "It's a big IV they put in your spine that numbs most of your lower body. It helps with the pain from the contractions and the actual pushing out the child part," I explained.
Nicks POV
I feel so bad for women. And I should have done a lot more reading. I'm glad Ellie is in a good enough mood to explain stuff to me. She said things are going to get rough the farther we get into the labor.
I looked at her as she slept. It was already 4:30 in the morning. I decided to call Gibbs while she was asleep and let him know. I quietly snuck out of the room so I wouldn't wake her.
I called Gibbs. It took him a few rings to pick up, but I could tell he was awake. He had his usual Gibbs voice.
"Hey, Gibbs,"
"Torres," He said
"I just wanted to let you know that Ellie went in to labor at about two this morning. We are at the hospital. But she's sleeping while she can," I explained. "Okay. Good luck, Torres, you'll need it. And whenever she wakes up, tell Bishop I said good luck. Keep me updated," he said. "Bye boss," I said. "Bye," he replied.
I walked back in and watched Ellie sleep for a few minutes before drifting off myself.
Ellie's POV
I woke up at five thirty and saw Nick asleep next to me. I whispered his name and he immediately jumped up. I laughed at his reaction upon waking up. "Mornin sunshine," I said. "Aren't you supposed to be in a bad mood?" He asked. I laughed. "I can make that happen in a heartbeat if that's what you'd prefer," I said, suddenly turning serious. "I'm good," he replied. I laughed again. The nurse soon came in to check on me.
"You are now three centimeters dilated," she said, writing a few things down on the clipboard.
"It's going to get bad soon," I told Nick when the nurse left. "Are the contractions starting?" He asked. "A little. But I can feel it slowly getting worse," I explained. "Should we tell the nurse?" He asked. I shook my head. They weren't bad enough for a needle in my spine. They'd be bringing it soon enough anyways.
Nick and I sat and talked for a while. We discussed more names and what it will be like for the next few hours. Needless to say, I did most of the talking when it came to explaining the labor and delivery process.
I let out a groan as I felt the contractions getting worse. They hadn't brought the epidural yet, so I was feeling all the pain. I called for my nurse and she came in a few minutes later with an anesthesiologist to give me the epidural.
"That was scary," I said when the nurses left. "You made it look easy," Nick said. I smiled.
A few minutes later, a nurse walked in and checked to see how dilated I was. "Looks like you'll be pushing soon. You're eight centimeters," she said. "That's really close," I said quietly. "You'll do great, honey," the nurse said before she left.
"I'm getting a little nervous, Nick," I said quietly, still trying to absorb the fact that I would have my baby in my hands in a matter of hours. "Why?" He asked, grabbing my hand and gently intertwining our fingers. "Well, what if I mess up or do something wrong? What if she doesn't like me? What if I'm not a good mom?" I worried. "Ellie, you are the strongest, smartest, most loving woman I know. You are going to be an amazing mom, and she is going to love you, and I know you'll always love her back. You're not going to mess up," he encouraged me.
Nick's POV
Ellie just kind of looked down. I've never really seen her scared like this. She's always so strong, and when she isn't, I can fix it. "Im sure you'll feel better once you hold her in your arms," I said softly. That made her smile a little. "Thanks, Nick. You really made me feel better," she said. I leaned over and kissed her softly.
I looked at the clock and noticed it was already 9:45. I guess the time just slipped away. "I'm gonna call Gibbs and update him," I told Ellie. She nodded her head. I kept her hand in mine and called Gibbs one handed.
"Gibbs," He said when he picked up.
"Hey, Gibbs. I was just calling to give you an update,"
"Okay. How're you two doing?"
"Ellie just hit about eight centimeters. They gave her the epidural about an hour ago. She's doing alright now," I explained.
"And you?" He asked.
"I'm fine. Just supporting my girl," I said.
"Is she nearby?"
"Yeah. Wanna talk to her?"
"Sure,"
I handed the phone to Ellie.
"Hey Gibbs," She said.
Ellie's POV
"You sound tired," Gibbs said. I laughed.
"I am," I said
"How you feelin'?" Gibbs asked.
"I'm alright. I'm really getting nervous, but I'm good. It got really bad before the epidural, but thankfully things are better now. Did you tell Tim?" I said.
"Yeah. He's waiting for me to give him an update on you as well," Gibbs said.
"I'll make sure we call you when she gets here," I told Gibbs.
"Alright. I'll let you go. Spend time with Torres. There won't be much more just the two of you. Good luck, Bishop," Gibbs said.
"Got it, boss. Thanks," I said. I hung up.
"You doin Alright?" Nick asked. I nodded. "I'm really nervous but I'm really excited to have her in my arms," I said.
A little while later, my nurse came back and found that I was 9 centimeters.
"You're almost there," Nick said, kissing my hand which was still holding his tightly. I smiled. Soon, our whole worlds would change.
