Chapter 3: Doubts and Freak outs

"You can do this Dani!" Brianna said encouragingly, the two of them were in the empty girl's bathroom. Daniella was hiding from Arina, who she feared might come up and talk to her in the halls. They barely talked after class, Arina tried to, but Daniella just shut the conversation down and gave out her number, instructing her to meet outside at lunch to work on the project. Now, it was 5 minutes to lunch and Daniella was beginning to freak out. 

"No I can't." She responded simply. "Can't I just ask the teacher to make you my partner?" 

"Already asked, apparently they do this for a reason, to get people to come out of their shell and work with people outside their friends group, or something..." Brianna responded in an annoyed tone.

"Damn it! WHO COMES UP WITH THIS CRAP?!" She yelled, sliding her back down the wall she hugged her knees to her chest. 

"Dani, calm down. You'll do fine on the project, you're great at math!"

"I'M TERRIBLE AT MATH!" Daniella cried, her arms shooting up in the air in over dramatic anguish. 

"Oh, right, that's me who's good at math..." Brianna muttered, Daniella just sighed and lay her head against her knees in dismay. 

"Hey, hey! It's okay! This way you can get more information on Arina, isn't that good?" Brianna smiled, sitting down as well. Daniella gave a half hearted groan in reply, muffled through layers of hair.

They sat in silence for a little while, Brianna knew she wouldn't be able to get through to her so she gave her time. Eventually Daniella took a deep breath and lifted her head. Bringing her pendent out and fiddling with it, Brianna gasped, slapping her hand away, the pendent fell back around her neck. Daniella flinched and stared back at her in shock.

"What are you doing!" Brianna exclaimed, "Your finger was like, inches away from the gem! Are you trying to transform in the middle of school?" 

Daniella took a quick breath as panic stirred through her, she didn't even realized what she was doing! Too distracted. "O-oh, shit. You're right! Ugh... What's wrong with me today?!" She groaned, pressing her head against the wall. That Arina girl was getting in her head.

Brianna placed a hand on her shoulder. "Dani, come on. It's gonna be fine. Look she's just a normal girl like y-! uh- oh, well-" Brianna's voice began to stutter as she realized her mistake. Daniella just sighed frustrated, rubbing her hands across her face.

"That's the problem Brianna..." Daniella explained, "I don't want any "Normal girls" around me, what if we become friends? What if she finds out I'm- You know... She could end up hurt. You're already enough of a liability." 

"Hey!" Brianna snapped in a sour tone, crossing her arms.

"Sorry, you know I mean that in the best way Bri..." Daniella apologized and Brianna's face softened. "I know." She giggled. 

"You'll be fine, just do this project and then you never have to interact with her again!" She said cheerfully, tilting her head as something flickered in Daniella's eyes. 

"But, what if-" She started, stopping herself before she could finish. 

"If what Daniella?" Brianna asked, moving a little closer. 

"What if she doesn't even like me..." She said quietly, avoiding Brianna's gaze in embarrassment. It was a stupid thought... She already had someone who liked her, Brianna. She didn't need anyone else. 

Brianna stared at her strangely, "Then, that's good, right? You can just go your separate ways." 

"Yeah, I guess, you're right." Daniella nodded, looking on at Brianna whose face twinged with confusion, but she didn't carry on. Instead bringing up her arm to check the time on her watch.

"You should get going. It's lunch now, you're already late." 

Daniella bit her lip, shooting Brianna a desperate gaze as if she could some how get her out of this. But of course, she couldn't... So with a sigh and a nervous clutch of her fist, she got up, opened the bathroom door, and walked out.
