Chapter 23: Arina's Torch

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Daniella cringed at her alarm, pressing her pillow against her ears she groaned. "No....five more minutes..." She moaned at the innamimate object.

"Ugh..." She sighed, finally getting out of bed to shut the damn thing up. Daniella hadn't gotten much sleep last night, after the day she'd had you'd think she would fall asleep as soon as her head touched the pillow; but she couldn't stop thinking about Arina. She wondered if she was okay, she seemed fine once the battle had ended. Tired, exhausted... But fine. Daniella offered to walk her back home but she insisted it she'd find her way back on her own, that she had some thinking to do. What did that mean? Daniella couldn't help herself envisioning all the things that could go wrong on her journey back, she wanted to text her about a hundred times last night but resisted. If she sent one message it would open the flood gates to another, then another, until their chat was filled with the worried blabberings of an insomniac.

"Why am I so worried..." Daniella muttered to herself.

"Whats gonna happen to her? She gets mugged? I'd be more scared for the mugger..." She chuckled, her stress beginning to ease off.

Instead of worrying Daniella tried her best to look forward to seeing Arina later at school, stretching her arms up she winced at her aching bones. After that battle a day at school seemed almost relaxing...

Daniella walked into school with a cheerful smile on her face, she didn't see Arina at the door so she looked around the lockers, but she wasn't there either... Maybe she was running late?

Daniella got out her phone.

Daniella: Hey Ari, at school where u at?

Daniella stared at the stagnant chat, twiddling her thumbs she tapped the screen a few times, exited the app, restarted it, nothing. Her message was left unresponded and unread.

Daniella: Arina? You there?

Daniella: Yooooo haven't seen you since last night....kinda freaking me out here

Daniella: please reply?

Daniella: beep

Daniella: beep

Daniella: beep

Daniella: Rose if you've done something I swear to god

"Who ya texting?" A voice chimed, shocking Daniella she threw her phone a foot in the air, fumbly catching it she quickly slipped it into her pocket.

"U-uh, j-just Arina." Daniella replied, "I haven't seen her today that's all."

"Uh-huh. I'm sure..." Brianna grinned.

"What...?"

"Don't think I haven't noticed Dani." Brianna giggled, crossing her arms.

Daniella felt a bead of sweat run down her forehead, did she know Arina's secret?! Oh god, she totally did. Damn it! Daniella never could keep a secret... How would she tell Arina? Would she ever forgive her?! This was the end of their friendship. All those good times... All those battles... All two of them, gone. Just like that. No! It couldn't end here! Daniella had to come up with something... An excuse... A perfect alibi.

"NO! WE WERE CAMPING AND SHE LEFT HER TORCH BEHIND S-SO I-I WAS JUST TEXTING TO TELL HER TO SAY I HAVE IT! IT WAS HER FATHER'S TORCH, HE DIED IN A FREAK POPCORN ACCIDENT AT AN AMUSEMENT PARK CAUSE HE ASKED FOR HIS POPCORN EXTRA CRISPY AND THEY LEFT THE POPCORN IN THE MACHINE FOR TOO LONG AND IT EXPLODED-! wait what did you say?"
