Elliana
"You must be prepared when the time comes, Princess."
Staring my father's most trusted advisor, and my future father-in-law, directly in the eye, I spoke: "I've been ready since I was born." He gave me a curt nod, bowed, and exited my room. I didn't care that he was annoyed, for I was definitely more annoyed.
This tradition was stupid. This whole thing was absurd. My father was perfectly capable of ruling, yet he had to give up the throne simply because the ancestors only allowed each ruler to reign for a millennia. I felt someone's presence in the room. "What!" I barked irritably.
"Sister." My head snapped up as Charlene entered the room and bowed to me. My expression softened as I waved my hand to close the door.
"Lena, don't bow to me. You're my sister." I hadn't meant to snap at her and I always felt guilty afterwards. I couldn't help but feel that my mood had drastically worsened every day we neared the wedding and my coronation. She ignored my comment and moved to sit next to me on my bed. Charlene was two years younger than me and was my god-sister. Her father had been a very close friend of my father's, but he had passed away a decade ago. After his passing, my father informally adopted Charlene and her younger sister, Charlotte. Their mother was still alive and they all resided in the palace with us.
Becoming an official daughter of the king, the both of them had inherited the powers of the Caelestis royals. Even within the royal family, not all had magic. Only the immediate family possessed it. Charlene and I were childhood friends. She and I were even closer than I was to my three other blood siblings.
"Guess who I ran into in the hallway?"
"Father?"
"Vance and Valeria." Of course. My future husband and one of the nobles' daughter. I knew what she was going to say before she even said it. There was no point in pretending this was anything other than a simple business transaction because I did not care for my future husband.
I sighed. "Lena-"
"Sister, can you not see that he is using you to get the Crown?" She said in exasperation.
"Lena, there's nothing going on between Vance and Valeria." I stated firmly. Despite knowing that I was likely lying, I definitely didn't need any rumors that the future Queen's husband to be was unfaithful.
"But you don't love him."
"Maybe I'll learn to one day. He's a decent guy."
"Elliana, are you happy?" I was taken aback for a moment before sighing and looking up to meet her eyes.
"You never call me that."
"Are you?"
I avoided her gaze again. "That's irrelevant. As future queen, I have a duty to my people. End of discussion." I stood up and left my room. Wandering through the corridors, I finally stopped at my father's bedroom. Leaning on the door, I muttered a silent promise. "I won't let you down."
