Parting with my mate was the most difficult thing of all, but she could not stay, and I could not leave again so soon without causing suspicion. I supposed that I should have been grateful, as this time as we parted, I knew that she loved me and we could communicate telepathically, but I was still upset. My mood was not helped when I walked into the kitchens and saw my mother harassing poor Consort Emilia while Consort Anastasia and Consort Emma stood by and rolled their eyes.

"Leave her alone!" I stormed over to my mother. When the other two Consorts stared at me in shock, I turned to them and hissed angrily. "What are you looking at?! Leave!"

They looked at me in shock before scurrying away. Before I could respond, my mother had slapped me across the face. Consort Emilia gasped in horror and immediately grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to turn so that she could examine my face. I forced myself not to flinch and grant my mother the satisfaction.

"Insolent child," She hissed. "I will take matters into my own hands if you refuse to respect your elders and mind your own business."

I pulled away from Consort Emilia and faced my mother with a confident smirk. "Oh really, mother? The last time I checked, I was the heir apparent, not you. You want to keep your power through your son, but it is I who was born into the royal family, and carries the bloodline, not you."

Consort Emilia grabbed my arm in shock. Mother's eyes flashed a dangerous colour and she took a step towards me, but I refused to back down. "Your majesty?" My head snapped to the side as I saw Kailey approaching us.

She didn't make eye contact with me and bowed to my mother. "Your majesty, his majesty, the king, requests your presence in the throne room immediately. He says that it's urgent."

My mother purses her lips together thinly before storming out, making sure to bump into me roughly. Kailey finally turned to me. "Oh, thank goodness."

I, on the other hand, was panicking. "Kailey, when she finds out you lied..."

"I didn't." She grinned. "I got one of the other maids to make a complete mess in the King and Queen's chambers." She suddenly glanced at Consort Emilia nervously but she just smiled at Kailey's revelation.

Suddenly, she turned to me with a solemn expression. "How was the meeting?"

I forced a small smile. "Very emotional."

"I assume you've been with her for the past several days?"

I nodded. "If I had a choice, I'd honestly spend every waking moment with her." Kailey looked between the two of us in confusion. I dismissed her with an "I'll explain later" and she scurried off.

"You've bonded." She commented.

"I'm hers and she's mine." I replied simply.

"Will the Elders and the Royal family ever be able to accept it?"

"I don't intend to reveal this until after my coronation."

"That could be dangerous. You could trigger a rebellion or if the people are angry enough, accusations of treason." She emphasized.

"I refuse to keep our love hidden." My voice hardened.

"I'm not asking you to, Princess, but you are engaged."

My jaw dropped in shock when I realized that I had completely forgotten this one little detail. I couldn't believe that I forgot about my "fiancé". I sighed and looked away. I knew that Vance loved Valerie, but he had also decided that it was his "duty" to marry me. Not that I would ever consider it now, but I knew that even had we wed, it was unlikely that he would give up his relationship with Valerie.
