Chapter Eight

Elliana

I was still coughing when we had returned to the palace. "I'll get Father!" Charlene turned to leave, but I quickly grabbed her wrist.

"No, please, give me a minute. I'll go to him myself." I gasped.

"You're coughing blood."

"Exactly." She stared at me. "You know this is triggered by extreme emotions. My mate probably told him she saw us at the festival. He'll know." I let out a laugh of incredulity. "The fates must have such a sense of humour. Making the future Queen a vampire's mate.

Not to mention she despises your very existence.

That thought got me coughing again and Lena quickly performed a suppression spell. I was able to breathe easier after that.

"So what if he knows?! She deserves anything he'll do to her after the suffering she's put you through and she basically rejected you!"

"She has her reasons. You cannot possibly think that she deserves anything simply for rejecting me. I also said I had Vance and I had to put the kingdom first." I said softly. "You mustn't blame her too much." I decided it would be best not to mention what she said about the royals being murderers.

"I just," she took a deep breath. "I just wanted you to be happy."

I understood where her anger was coming from. It was the same reason why she insisted that I join the festivities with the humans this year. I smiled softly at her. "I am happy, Lena. I have you, I saw Markus again, and I-I know my mate cares deep down. How lucky am I, to have someone like that?" I was lying about the last part, but I had to.

"Elli..."

"Don't cry. I'm going to see Father now, alright?" She nodded.

Two weeks later

Demi

I stared into the eyes of the human and compelled him to forget. Then I healed the wounds before shoving him aside. I felt empty. The longer I was away from my mate, the worse it became. I dreamt of her pure blue eyes and beautiful smile.

I sighed and looked around me. A pile of unconscious humans surrounded me. I groaned. Ma was going to be furious.

CRACK.

Speak of the devil. Ma was silent as she scanned around us. "Really, Demi? Really?!" She looked both exasperated and angry.

I avoided her gaze. In a flash, she was in front of me, glaring at me. "I'm sorry." I groaned. "Just please help me clean this up."

"You're attracting a lot of bad attention which is going to alert the Caelestis!"

"Let them at me. I don't care." 

"Really?" Ma began to circle me. "You don't care about yourself, but how about Anzon and I?"

"They won't hurt you." I turned to walk away.

"And your mate?"  I froze in my tracks.

"What does that girl have anything to do with this?"
