Walls Could Talk

"We live in adjacent apartments and our bedrooms are on opposite sides of a very thin wall and one night I heard you crying and talked to you through the wall"

Zoe had only lived in the apartment for a short time, and the noise from her neighbor was already getting to her. Her neighbor, who she knew was a female about her age, had raging parties nightly which kept her from getting much needed rest, and she was starting to become very irritated by it. It was Saturday night, and she was preparing for what was to come, but it was silent on the other side of the wall. She thanked the heavens as she settled under her blankets with her favorite book and a cup of coffee. She read for well over an hour before she started to hear activity from the opposite side of the wall. She rolled her eyes as she set her book down on the table next to her bed and she started towards the wall to give her neighbor a piece of her mind but she stopped when she heard... crying. She pressed her ear up against the wall to confirm that she wasn't just hearing things, and sure enough, the muffled sobbing was clear as day in her ears. She lifted her hand and knocked on the wall raptly, and the crying almost immediately stopped.

"What the hell do you want?" The scratchy voice from the other side croaked out, and she was perplexed that she would have even acknowledged her presence, let alone question her actions.

"You okay over there?" She asked loudly, before pressing her ear back against the wall to hear her response. She heard sniffling and slight movement, before the girl finally answered back to her in a sharp tone.

"What's it to you?" She sighed, and rested her forehead against the cool surface, trying to gather herself before she said anything that would make the girl feel worse than she clearly already did. She straightened up and traced her fingertips against the wall, lowering her voice as she addressed her once more, this time in a less than compassionate tone.

"Look, I've had to deal with your parties and your loud sex having and your horrendous taste of music, so the least you could is allow me to be nice to you instead of being a bitch like I probably should have been the first time this happened." Silence met her, and she turned to go back to her reading, but the timid voice stopped her in her tracks.

"Wait. Might as well tell someone who can't judge me. So I started seeing this guy about a month or so ago, and he was really nice to me, bought me things and shit like that. Well, yesterday, about 4pm, he called me to cancel the plans we had made for today. I thought nothing of it because I trusted him and everything, but today goes by with no response from him, so I decide to go to his apartment and see what's going on, and I walk in to him doing doggy style with my best friend since kindergarten. It's a stupid thing to cry over, but I really cared about him you know? He was the only person that liked me for me, and not just my looks." She sighed sadly at what she had just been told and she slid down the wall to sit directly facing it, imagining that she was speaking to her face to face rather than through a wall that could be kicked down with the toe of her boot.

"That's fucking awful, I'm sorry he did that to you. But if it counts for anything, I'm sure you'll be able to find someone who appreciates everything about you, and doesn't just choose to love one part of you. As for the best friend aspect of the situation, you seem like a cool girl, so it wouldn't be too hard for you to find someone just as cool as you are. Granted, the memories you shared with her won't be the same with your new friend, but that gives you the opportunity to make better ones. I know how you feel, so if you ever need someone to talk to, just knock three times on the wall and I'm here okay?" She finished, pressing her hand up against the wall as she awaited her neighbors next words.

"That.. makes a lot of sense actually. I've just been too focused on my personal appearance that I don't see people are trying to find the real me. You're right about the best friend thing too, except it's a he rather than a she but it still hurts the same way. You're really intelligent, you must be a doctor in training or something." She laughed, which made her chest do something it hadn't done in a long time. She shook away the feeling however and focused her attention back onto the mystery girl, who was still babbling about something she couldn't quite understand.

"I'm a therapist in training actually, but close enough. Thank you for the compliment by the way, it's nice to meet someone who appreciates my intelligence for what it is. Though we're not really acquainted yet.. I'm Zoe." This would have been the moment she shook the girls hand but she realized the limited contact she could have with her at the moment, so she just placed her hand back into her lap.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Zoe, I'm Madison. I would shake your hand.. but you know." She laughed once more, and she felt a warmth blossom throughout her chest at the noise. They sat talking well into the night, over mundane things and different hobbies they shared or liked to do. When they both said goodnight, Zoe crawled under her covers and turned her lights out, looking up at the ceiling as she envisioned a friendship between herself and the girl next door. She fell asleep with a smile on her face, not realizing Madison was thinking about the same exact thing as she was only... more close.
