Prompt; Zoe and Madison dancing in the moonlight.
A/N; stream moonlight by chase atlantic while listening to this.
Zoe had expected tonight to be the best night of her young life. Prom had always been something she had looked forward to since she was a freshman, and she had even started plans in her junior year to make sure it was a memorable one. Prom would be memorable, not at the hands of the title of Prom Queen or any other festivities but because of her own boyfriend Kyle, who she had learned had been sleeping around with one of her good friends, thus breaking her heart and leaving the best night of her life in fragments, staining the jovial memories with tears and heartbreak. She sat on the edge of the gazebo outside of the building, listening to the sounds of the faint music pumping in and out of the large speakers that had been set up inside. Her shaking fingers picked at the edges of her ruby red dress, which was starting to become speckled with spots of dirt the longer she sat there.
"Why did this have to happen to me?" She muttered to herself, reaching up to wipe away fresh tears that streaked down her cheeks, but in her haste, she hadn't realized dirt had found a place on her palm, which was now covering the side of her face. Zoe cursed loudly as she worked to scrub the dirt off of her face with her fingertips, but she seemed to be making matters worse, so she sighed in defeat and let her hands fall back into her lap. The cool wind blew across her exposed skin, and she resisted the urge to shiver, not wanting to appear weaker than she already did.
"Are you okay?" A familiar voice asked from a few inches away, and she looked up into the concerned eyes of Madison Montgomery, one of Kyle's best female friends. Zoe swallowed hard as she looked away from the blonde's magnetic stare, electing to ignore the concern to make things easier for herself, and to take the heart wrenching situation and twist it into her favor.
"Did you know Kyle was cheating on me?" Her voice was soft, but it was like she had used a bullhorn to project the question out into the open, which forced Madison down to her level, their eyes meeting rather quickly as they stared at one another.
"If I knew, you wouldn't even be here with him right now." The blonde said strongly, a hand going up to brush a piece of hair behind her ear that had fallen from the intricate bun her mother had crafted for her, and Zoe could have wept at the simple but sweet gesture. She knew Madison's words were sincere, not only in the way that she spoke them, but because of her eyes whenever she delivered them. Before she could say anything else, the smaller girl plopped down next to her with a soft sigh, and more silence ensued. Her heart pounded out of her chest as she tried not to look at the girl sitting next to her, and she was confused as to why she was feeling so nervous around her when she had spent most of her relationship with Kyle in her company.
"Do you wanna dance with me, Zoe?" Madison asked confidently, already rising to her feet with one hand outstretched down towards her. Zoe had lost all words as she stared up at the blonde, so with one last mental shove, she took her hand and allowed herself to be pulled up to her full height, which slightly towered over the smaller girl. She felt herself be guided to the center of the gazebo, where the music sounded the loudest, but before she could back out of the tempting offer, she felt a small hand grip her waist.
"You do know where to put your hands, don't you?" Madison asked with a quirked eyebrow, making a blush appear on her cheeks as she shyly put one hand on the blonde's shoulder, feeling their hands wrap around one another as she did so. Zoe felt like her heart was going to explode from her chest as they moved around in a lazy circle, the music from indoors just loud enough to make the moment a little special to them both.
"Thank you Madison, really. You're a really good person." Zoe said softly, feeling the smaller girl slightly twirl her closer to her body, making a warmth shoot up from her toes to the top of her head, mimicking the feeling of floating. They continued to dance closer and closer, until the blonde was standing at the tops of her feet to give off the illusion that she was taller, and that's when everything... shifted.
"Kyle is a fucking idiot for cheating on someone as beautiful as you." Madison murmured, her finger twirling and untwirling a lock of hair that had fallen from her bun, and Zoe's temperature rose at least 5 degrees from her featherlike touch alone. The girls still danced, adding in a few timid smiles as their fingers dug into one another's flesh, the passion between them almost suffocating.
"Thank you, thank you." Zoe said as her head dropped to Madison's shoulder, holding her close as they swayed from side to side, any cares either of them might have had now vanished in the embrace of each other. She felt tears brimming on her lashes as she held the blonde close to her, not wanting this moment to ever end between them, but knowing that even thinking it was something foolish. She was afraid of what was going to face her in the future, all of the rumors and verbal abuse from her former friend group following the breakup, but as long as she had Madison on her side, she wasn't alone, not really.
