(There is also an alternate ending to this so if you prefer to read that one, then you can skip the primary ending because it is very dark after all. Thank you.)
Dawn was just breaking over the horizon when Madison felt the space beside her begin to shift, and she looked over to see Zoe's bare back looking her in the face, reminding her that this would be all that she ever was to her, a momentary relief. She prepared herself for the wave of pain that she knew would pass over her, and sure enough, as the brunette was pulling her top on, the pain settled on her chest like a nearly unbearable weight.
"Thanks. I'm glad you were available." Zoe said as she stood up to pull her shorts up her legs, and Madison couldn't help her traitorous eyes that wandered up her long legs and settled at the sliver of skin that was between the hem of her tank top and the beginning of her shorts. She looked away quickly, her fingers clutching weakly at the sheet that covered her nudeness, and she nodded at the brunette's words softly. It had been this way for a long time now; Zoe and Kyle would get into an explosive fight, Zoe would call her up, and Madison would pathetically let her into her bed like she always did, not caring at that moment that she wasn't loved the way she wanted to be.
I love you more.
Please don't leave.
Stay.
I need you.
"Zoe?" Madison said softly as the brunette was pulling her hair into a ponytail, and Zoe's eyes burning into her face made her heart skip inside of her chest. Her throat was dry and her palms were sweaty and she was unsure of why she whispered her name in such a longing way, so with a sigh of defeat, she sat up slowly, her hand clutching at the sheet (but really at her heart, which was bleeding inside of her chest.)
"You're welcome." She responded just as softly, and Zoe stared at her with an unrecognizable expression, before she smiled feebly and exited the bedroom, leaving Madison alone with her pain. Her eyes stayed trained on the door for a long time, hoping, praying, that Zoe would finally understand that she loved her more than he did and come back, but when she didn't come back and the silence became deafening, that's when Madison decided to release her pain.
"Why can't you choose me this time." She thought as tears pooled down around her collarbone, the weight on her chest still as heavy as ever.
(It hurts, Madison hates that it hurts, but there's nothing that she can do to make her stay, so she laid alone, wondering just how much time it would take for her to be completely destroyed by this suffocating devastation.)
The second time they meet, Madison knows that something is different. It lies in the way that Zoe seems almost apprehensive to be touched, and the way she refuses to let the blonde remove her shirt when their lips meet passionately.
"What's wrong, love?" Madison asks as she reaches out to Zoe, who flinches away from her touch, and it's in that moment that she begins to become suspicious. She purses her lips and settles next to the brunette, who refuses to look at her. Madison let out a sigh and reached for a cigarette, inhaling the toxic fumes into her lungs deeply and resting her head against the beige painted wall, waiting for Zoe to speak or do anything that signaled she was either ready to continue, or to leave.
"I shouldn't have come here." Zoe said suddenly, quickly diving for her shoes and stuffing her feet into them, and normally, Madison would have let her leave, but she wasn't going to give up so easily this time. She intercepted her lover just as she reached the door, blocking the exit with her body as they stared at one another.
