Both girls had known that Madison's health had been rapidly declining for sometime now, but the last thing Zoe expected was for her girlfriend to collapse at their end of summer party and have to be whisked to the hospital. She did everything possible to find a way there, to be at the love of her life's side, but it seemed like obstacle after obstacle faced her, which is why she took off in the dead of night on foot, not caring that her feet were being torn up because that pain would go away while the pain of losing the only positive light in her life would not. She was covered in sweat by the time she had dragged herself into the lobby, and she nearly fell to her knees from exhaustion when she step foot onto the pristine linoleum floor. She used the last of her strength to weakly ask the concerned secretary where Madison Montgomery's room was located, and she gave her the answer, out of pity or fear she was unsure, but she took the information and weaved through corridors, some vacant and some not, just to reach the dying blonde, who could already be dead for all she knew. When she fell in front of the door, she saw the back of Mallory, who was their best friend and who had called the paramedics in the first place. The brunette turned to look over her shoulder and when she saw Zoe on the floor, she rushed from Madison and to the thin brunette, who barely registered herself being pulled from the cold ground. She steered them out of hearing distance of the blonde and embraced her despite all the sweat and dirt covering her skin. She pulled back and kept a firm grip on her upper arms, a somber expression finding a home on her face.
"Zoe? Oh my god you look terrible, but I'm glad you're here, we all are. The doctors say she doesn't have long now, maybe a few hours at the most. The cancer spread viciously fast and she's so weak she can barely move her body at all, but she's been asking for you, so you should go inside and see her, no matter how much it hurts." She advised her friend, who felt as if her whole world was slowing down impossibly fast, making her head ache and her vision dotted with stars.
"Okay." She said, pulling away from Mallory and going into the room, where Madison looked miserable hooked up to a variety of machines, but when she saw that Zoe was there, her face lit up in a feeble smile and her eyes shined at the mere sight of her. She plastered a smile onto her face and sat down in the chair next to the bed, but the blonde shook her head and slowly moved herself to the right, giving her just enough room to climb into the bed next to her. With a heavy heart, the brunette obliged, and her arms instinctively wrapped around her girlfriend as gently as possible, careful not to disturb all the tubes sticking from her skin. Her tears soaked the blonde strands of hair she had run her hands through more times than she could count, and she couldn't grasp that this was the last time she would ever feel Madison warm next and alive next to her. They had laid like this so much time, never certain of when it would be the last time, but now that it was for sure the last time, Zoe wasn't sure if she was strong enough to let her go. The petite blonde's cough rattled her lungs, and it was a very audible and very frightening sound and she knew that she was nearing closer and closer to the end.
"Hey Mads, do you want me to sing for you?" She would always sing softly to Madison whenever she was afraid, when she was anxious, or whenever she just wanted to hear Zoe's angelic voice, but it was something that relaxed her and made her more prepared for what was to come, which she thought was more than appropriate now.
"Y-Y-Yes." She heard her whisper, and the weakness of her voice was enough to make tears well up in her eyes. She wasn't sure if she could perform this last song to her lover, but she knew that she must, because this would be the last time either one of them would ever hear her singing voice again.
"I'm gonna sing one of our favorite nursery rhymes. You know which one I'm going to do don't you my love?" She said gently, drawing Madison into her arms and resting her chin on the top of her head, the usual positions they adopted whenever Zoe sang for her in the past. She took a long and shaky breath before clearing her throat and humming the first few lines before she became audible.
"You are my s-sunshine, my only s-sunshine, you make me h-happy when skies are grey." Her crying was picking up more and more now, and she pressed a hand against her mouth to stifle her sobs, taking a few minutes to collect herself before she pressed on.
"Y-you'll never know dear how much i l-love you," She heard a gasping breath escape Madison, "Please don't take my s-s-s-sunshine away." She finished the short rhyme and squeezed the blonde as close as she could possibly get with the space they had been given. She heard a few more struggled breaths escape from her cracked lips, before it went silent, and she flatlined. Multiple nurses and doctors came rushing in, ready to perform CPR on her, but she sadly shook her head, indicating that it was inevitable.
"She's gone." She said softly, before falling to the floor and curling up into a fetal position, looking up at the bright lights above her. She didn't know when she became inconsolable, but she didn't think of anything except the crushing pain that now weighed heavy on her chest, suffocating her slowly. She felt herself losing consciousness, but right before the light went out, she could have swore she saw a halo of blonde hair.
A/N; (To clarify, Zoe didn't die, she just fainted because the pain was too much for her to bear and the halo of blonde hair she saw before she passed out was Madison if you didn't catch onto that.) First update in over a month and a half I believe and y'all already know it had to be a sad one considering that's all i know how to write semi decent lmfao. Anyways, I wanted to say thank you for over 9,000 reads on this story! I never thought that I would even make it as far as 1k but I'm thankful that so many people took a chance on this one shots book, and a chance on me. I'm appreciative of every vote, every comment, every moment of recognition and accomplishment, and the support from the people who I know are patient and always enjoy a good update. The delay was so extended because I honestly didn't have much inspiration to write Zadison but I'm listening to sad songs and I saw this prompt on Tumblr and I just had to write it. I hope it's a good present for everyone who has been patient, and I hope that not too many of you are angry with me for not writing in so long! Please vote and comment your thoughts because your feedback means the world to me and is so incredibly important to me, even though I'm a negligent writer at times :// Hope everyone is well x.
[Note; I'm probably not going to update as often as i used to, because this was completely an impulsive update to be perfectly honest with you guys so don't be alarmed if I ghost for a period of time and then randomly write a new part, just like I did tonight lmfao]
