CHAPTER TEN. LISTENING.

ellie went back home that night. the slightly cooler breeze whipped around her body. but this time, she didn't smile in happiness, she only brought the jacket closer to her body and looked down. she noticed the trees blowing harder with the passing time. it was going to storm soon.

eleanor's tired feet finally reached her apartment. they stomped up the metal steps, echoing through the already loud and busy new york nights. ellie reached for her house key, but realized the door was already slightly ajar. she pocketed her keys again and slowly walked through the door.

she didn't know what she was expecting to find. maybe a few bad guys with a vendetta against her father. maybe even a gun pointed straight to her face. but what she found was definitely not the first thing she'd expected. she opened the door to see her father sitting on the couch, drinking a beer. a quick glance around the house and ellie knew it definitely wasn't the only beer he'd had that night. did he just sit around and drink all day?

"it's not like you can get drunk," ellie sneered, startling her father and walking further into the room. she took off her jacket and hung it up by the door. her put her keys in the little dish that she made in pottery.

"ellie!" wade yelled in surprise. he stood up quickly and turned towards his daughter. he had on his usual hoodie and sweats. his arms opened for a hug. this is when ellie noticed the phone in his hand. before he could reach ellie, he lifted the phone back up to his ear. "i - nevermind, logan, she's here. yes, call it off - call it all off. thanks anyway. of course, brunch on me. uh-huh. buh-bye."

wade ended the call and rushed over to his daughter. he wrapped his arms around her shoulders and took her into a hug. "i'm so glad you're okay, i thought...i thought - "

"what, you thought you were finally done with me?" ellie said. she escaped from his hold and turned, walking to her room. her eyes watered but she quickly wiped them away and continued to walk towards her room.

wade stood shocked for a moment. shocked that she would even say it, but shocked that she thought it in the first place.

ever since ellie left the next day, wade was calling around non-stop. he called the school to see if there were any meetings at the school -- human rights club, choir rehearsal, anything. "what? no --"
