"Lion Cub, we go through this every weekend," Yoongi groaned as his seventeen-year-old son ran laps around the house in his excitement. Taehyung let out a loud squeal that was way too unnatural for how deep his voice was. "Dad, this is still really exciting," he insisted as he finally sat down on the empty counter by the sink, watching his father cook dinner. Yoongi rolled his eyes as he bit back a smile.
No matter how cold he seemed, he still loved to see his son all smiles and giddy. A happy Taehyung was the best Taehyung.
Silence overtook the kitchen for a little while until the front door opened, along with a shout of, "I'm here! And I brought dessert!" Yoongi braced himself as Taehyung shot up from his spot on the counter, crashing through the house as he chanted, "Hobi!" repeatedly.
Hoseok quickly set his container of cookies down before his boyfriend launched himself into his arms, hugging the life out of him. "Tae!" he cheered, kissing the top of his boyfriend's lavender hair. Taehyung smiled at him, having to look up a little because he still wasn't taller than Hoseok just yet. He still had some growing to do.
"I missed you. We've been busy," he mumbled as he kissed Hoseok gently.
"Get your asses in here! I want to see my other kid!" Yoongi snapped, making the couple jump in surprise. Taehyung grabbed the cookie container in one hand, Hoseok's in the other, and all but dragged him into the kitchen. Yoongi stood in the center of the kitchen, hands on his hips. He immediately pulled the twenty-eight-year-old into a brief hug.
"Hey, Hobi. Still as radiant as always," he hummed, earning a small smile. "Hey, Yoongi-hyung. Still as fatherly as always," the younger replied, a nervous glint in his eyes.
Yoongi smiled as Taehyung wrapped his arms around his older boyfriend, the promise ring still glinting on its chain. He'd had that ring for such a long time, but it still looked brand-new. Hoseok smiled and wrapped an arm around his little boyfriend, pinching his chubby cheek lovingly. "You're getting chubby, baby. It looks good on you," he muttered and Taehyung blushed, shyly hiding his face in Hoseok's neck.
"You two never change. Let's go eat," Yoongi said, pushing the couple over to the dining room.
Dinner went by smoothly like always. They went over how Hoseok's week was teaching biology at the high school that rivaled Taehyung's - though, he'd always sneak to the games and cheer on his boyfriend's football team, but mainly because Taehyung played saxophone in the marching band. Yoongi talked about the boy he was asked to mentor over at BigHit: Jeon Jungkook. He was a twenty-year-old singer who wanted to learn how to produce, so Yoongi became his mentor.
It was the end of dinner that went south.
"Yoongi-hyung, I need to tell you something," he breathed out suddenly, causing Taehyung to shut his mouth and stare at his boyfriend in horror; he knew exactly what Hoseok was about to say. Yoongi straightened up in his chair, a confused frown on his face at the seriousness in Hoseok's voice. "What is it? What's wrong?"
"Last week, when Tae was at my house for my birthday, I..." Hoseok took a deep breath and held tight to Taehyung's hand, which rested in his lap. "We had sex."
The color drained from Yoongi's face, but not out of anger or disappointment: out of fear. "You're underage, Taehyung," he sighed finally, eyes landing on his son, who looked like he was about to cry. "I'm sorry, Dad," Taehyung whimpered and Hoseok let him lean against him. "We used protection, I swear. And I didn't pressure him to do it and I always gave him the option to stop," he rushed out, eyes silently pleading with Yoongi to not hate him.
Yoongi wanted to be mad. He wanted to forbid Hoseok from seeing Taehyung ever again. He wanted to ground his son for the rest of his life.
But he was just a father. He had to face that fact that his precious baby was almost an adult and needed to make his own decisions. Taehyung was growing up and it broke his heart.
"Excuse me," he barely managed, getting up from the table to go into his room. Hoseok sighed and rested his head on his boyfriend's. "He's mad, isn't he?" Taehyung sniffled, wiping a tear from his cheek. The older man kissed his head and looked at their entwined hands, rubbing the back of the younger boy's hand with his thumb. "No, baby. He isn't mad. Hurt, maybe, but not mad," he said quietly, then let his boyfriend's hand go to pat his thigh. "I'll go talk to him, okay? Don't cry." Taehyung nodded and let his boyfriend up.
When Hoseok reached Yoongi's bedroom, guilt washed over him. The stone man he considered to be his second father was crying as he looked at a picture of Taehyung when he was a baby. Hoseok was in the picture as well. It was Taehyung's first birthday and the eleven-year-old version of himself was standing in front of the Christmas tree, holding the super-chubby baby in his arms. The baby's arm was around Hoseok's neck, eyes wide as he attempted to pucker his lips to kiss Hoseok.
"I remember that," Hoseok said as he sat next to Yoongi. "My parents were on a business trip, so you invited me to spend Christmas with you and Tae. I was trying to get him to kiss me." Yoongi nodded, smiling fondly through the tears. "It's one of my best memories of you two," he admitted, setting the photo down. He wiped his eyes and took a deep, shaky breath.
"I'm sorry, just... That's my baby. I held him first, watched him take his first steps and say his first words... He was my baby before he became yours," he said quietly, earning a nod of understanding. "I know. That's what went through my mind on my birthday." Yoongi shrugged and played with his fingers. "But this is life and it's natural and he can't be in my care forever. Maybe I'm just not ready for this whole 'empty-nest' thing just yet."
Hoseok nodded and patted his back. "Neither were my parents, Yoongi-hyung. But if it makes you feel better, me and Tae won't be doing anything like that for a while."
-------
After Hoseok went home and Taehyung got ready for bed, Yoongi sat down on his son's bed. He rubbed Taehyung's shoulder, a hum leaving his lips. "Lion Cub, I'm not mad at you. I promise I'm not mad." The teenager shifted to look up at his father, a small pout on his lips. Yoongi brushed the lavender strands of hair out of his son's eyes and smiled.
"You were my baby first, Taehyung. I don't like that you're growing up," he said simply. Taehyung nodded and held his arms out sleepily. "I love you, Daddy," he whimpered as he received a kiss on his forehead. "I love you too, TaeTae. I love you a lot," Yoongi hummed, then stayed with his son until he fell asleep.
