I opened the door to the coffee shop and he was looking up at the menu. I walked up next to him.
"So your name?" I asked him as I looked up too.
"What about my name?"
"What is it?" I asked slightly annoyed.
"Ashton Irwin."
I nodded, never having heard that name before.
"Alright well see you later." I said going up to order my coffee.
"Wow you only want me for my name?"
I didn't say anything. I just flashed him a smile before turning around to order.
After school, I rushed home hoping to take a nice long nap before I started all my homework. I opened the door to both my parents, arms crossed and unhappy.
"We got your grade updates today." My dad said holding up a piece of paper.
Oh no.
"Three Bs Emma? What happened? I expected more from you."
"I'm sorry, it won't happen again." I said looking down at my shoes.
"To get into a good medical program you need better grades than this. I hope you pull yourself together." He said before storming off upstairs. My mother gave me sympathetic pat on the shoulder before following him.
I grabbed my pack of cigarettes and threw my backpack on the couch. I stepped into the backyard and lit it, letting it calm me down.
I didn't like disappointing my parents. I appreciated everything they did and I wanted to repay them with being a good daughter but I didn't want to say no. Yeah being a doctor would be great, but I just don't find it inspiring anymore. I wanted to do something that inspired me and made me happy. I just have no idea what that is yet and that scares me. And if my parents found out, it would scare them too. They have controlled almost every part of my life. What I read, what I watched, where I hung out and who I hung out with. They didn't like Alex whose been my best friend since 2nd grade. They think she's a bad influence. But that's why I'm so fascinated by her world. She can do whatever she wants. That's something I can't do.
"I didn't know you smoked." Ashton's head peeked out from behind the fence.
"Yeah. It helps calm me down."
"It could kill you, you know." He warned.
"I know." I replied. At least I could control that part of my life. When I die and when I live.
"You should put it away before your dad finds you." He joked, but I didn't feel like joking around.
"Maybe he should find me." I said staring up at his window.
"You ok?" He asked.
"Yeah, just the stress that come with being a good girl." I said with a shrug.
"Good girl? I would have believed that before but not now." He said laughing.
"Good girls are bad girls that haven't been caught."
"What? That doesn't make any sense."
"Yes it does."
"I don't get it."
"How can you not get that?"
"I just don't. I'm sorry I don't take 3 AP classes. You're making me feel self conscious. Stop."
"4 actually."
"That doesn't help me at all whatsoever." He said laughing and I joined him. I almost completely forgot about my father while arguing with him. I needed to keep forgetting and apparently this guy was really good at doing that for me.
