I was up early for work. I was up even before Charles. I wondered what had gotten into him last night because he performed like a monster. He did things he hasn't done in a long time. Was he trying to prove something to me or to himself? When I got to work one of the partners, Jack Becker was already there. He had a big case this morning. I don't usually assist him but his assistant Meghan was off today. Why he gave her the day off on the first day of a murder trial was beyond me. Lucky for him I came in early. And of course he needed help. "Hi Dina." he said breathing noisily through his nose. "Could you pull Derek Brown's phone records for me? Meghan said she did it a couple weeks ago. If she did they should be in his file." "Sure." I answered walking over to Meghan's desk to look through her files.
Meghan was new to the firm and the look of her files showed it. I made a mental note to offer her help with her system if she wanted it. It took me twenty minutes to find the files Jack needed. When I finally found it I handed it over to him. Then he needed me to set up an appointment to have the victim's family come in this afternoon to brief them on the case. They didn't want to be at the trial and Jack always made a point to keep the families updated in person. Luckily for him Chris Young, the other partner who I worked for was in an early morning meeting. So I was free to help him. At 11:00 he was ready to go. He came back once because he forgot his brief case and again because he always took his lucky pen with him to trial. He was a bit of a nerd but a very intelligent lawyer. I wouldn't want him on the opposite side of the table if I was being accused of murder.
Chris showed up at 12:15. He was on his cell phone as usual. He nodded as he passed by my desk. I was just beginning to clean up some old files for storage when Chris called my desk phone. "Hi Dina, are you busy?" "Just getting some old files ready for storage." "Can you come back here please?" "Sure." I got up and walked back to Chris's office. Chris was about my age. He was a nice looking man. He was tall. He was very brown for a white man and always kept a nice haircut. He smelled good. I asked him once when he was hanging around my desk what kind of cologne he wore but he said it was something his wife bought. I met her a couple times when she came down to take him to lunch. She was a beautiful woman. I always thought Chris was lucky to have her. Anyway, he had these beautiful piercing green eyes. I noticed them when I interviewed with him. I noticed them now standing in his doorway.
"Come on in and have a seat." he said smiling. I hoped I wasn't about to get fired. I didn't want to act a fool today. But it was exactly the opposite. "I'm taking a case for a family member. My wife's brother is being accused of a hit and run. It was fatal." "I'm so sorry Mr. Young. What happened?" "First of all my name is Chris, Mr. Young is my father." he smiled. "Secondly, he has a drinking problem and he was drunk off his ass. He hit a mother and her two children. The mother and one child, a 6 year old girl, survived. Her 10 year old son was not so lucky. Anyway, he says he swerved to watch out for a dog in the street. I don't believe him but, ya know." He said. "I tried to talk to the family about getting him help when he got drunk and hit a light pole but they wanted to believe he was fine. My father in law being a congressman didn't want it brought to light that his son is a drunk. Even if I could get him off I don't want to, he needs to learn his lesson."
I didn't say anything. I knew better than to comment on family business. "So, with that being said, I need you to see what you can dig up on some other cases involving drunk driving and fatalities, and I know I don't need to ask you to be discreet. " "Of course...I'm on it." I said. "I know you will be." he answered winking. Something about the way he said that made me think he was flirting with me. But my mind has been so perverted that I thought maybe I was just tripping. This is a married man. Some men are still good to their wives. I left it at that and got up to leave but as I did a slight turn around I caught him checking out my ass. I wanted to ask him if he liked what he saw but instead I just smiled and left.
I went back to my desk and got to work on the information he needed. I loved my work. Besides the fact that it paid well, I got to learn something new everyday. It wasn't just a boring, run of the mill kind of job. So, when Chris called me back to his office ten minutes later I was hoping it was still about this case. I liked to be involved in the grunt work that brings about justice. "I was wondering if you were free this evening. I'd like your help with this. It turns out they are moving his court date up to two weeks from Friday instead of three so I need to get prepared." "Sure, nothing is going on that I'm aware of. I'll just give a call home to let my family know." "Thanks Dina, I know this is last minute but I really appreciate it."
I called home. Antonio was up and feeling better but not yet ready to be out and about. He said he was fine and he would tell Z to cook something. I guess he wasn't mad at her anymore. I called Charles and Kenya answered his office phone. She said he was out at a showing. I could have called his cell phone but I didn't feel like talking to him. I wanted so badly to tell this bitch off but I kept calm. "Please let him know I called and that I'll be home late tonight. I have to work on a case with Mr. Young." "I will Mrs. Waters." she said smacking her gum into the phone. Hearing her call me Mrs. Waters made my blood boil. Knowing what you know and still doing what you did and probably still doing. He certainly didn't hire her for her intelligence and he didn't keep her around for her professionalism. I'm sure she couldn't wait to tell him.
I finished out the day gathering up all the cases and facts that I could find. Chris wanted to have a dinner meeting at Roblet's. We met there at 6:00. It was conveniently located a couple blocks from the office. His brother-in-law Miguel was already there. From his conversation, he sounded like he'd already started drinking before we arrived. "What the hell are you thinking?!" Chris asked him. "What man?" he slurred. "You're fucking drunk right now! Do you want me to defend you or not!? You're impossible!" Chris was yelling in a hushed tone. "I just had a couple drinks, man, that's all. You had me waiting." he said childishly slumping in the seat. "I'll tell you this one time, and one time only." Chris said sternly. "You better stop drinking if you want me to defend you. For God's sake, man, you killed a kid! If you can't get that through your god damn head then find another attorney and I mean it." he said waving his finger at Chris. Then he turned to me. "Dina, would you please call him a cab?" he asked me in a calmer tone. I could see he was trying to calm down. I stepped away from the table to call him a cab.
