Yn's POV
Right now, we were in a meeting room at the hospital putting together pieces of our new case. "Jessica Pope, Carol Shepperd, Dani Frank. Each brought independently to Med with no connection between 'em except an overdose of chemo for a cancer they don't have. I wanna know who prescribed that stuff" Voight said. "51 said that the gas explosion in Jessica's apartment caused a flashover. So there is nothing left but char. There's no phone, no laptop, no datebook. Nothing" Adam said.
"We talked to Dani Frank's girlfriend. They hadn't been dating that long. She didn't know Dani's doctor. But she did say that Dani was doing better until she took a turn, and when she confronted her doctor about it he put her on an experimental protocol that was supposed to beat it" Erin said. "Sorry to interrupt" Dr. Manning said and entered the room. "A new patient just rolled into the ED. Unconscious, pancytopenic just like the others. Look, I don't know if this is legal, but, right now, I really don't care. That's her stuff. Have at it" she said and placed a purse on the table.
"All right, Leah Kamen, 42, lives in Edgewater" Antonio said. "She's a shift manager at a telemarketing firm" Erin said. "Insurance card. I'll call the company, see if they got the name of the doctor who submitted the claim." "Hey, is there any way to trace the chemicals in their system back to a specific manufacturer" I ask. "A mass spectrometry test was performed on Jessica. We can order the same for the others. There're only a few manufacturers" Dr. Manning said. "Will you do it?" "Yep." "Thanks Nat. You're the best" I say.
"Uh, Leah has Dani Frank, Carol Shepperd, and Jessica Pope as contacts on her phone. All our victims knew each other" Kevin said. "I got a name. Dr. Dean Reybold" Antonio said. Voight stared at all all of us for a second before leaving the room, Erin on his tail. "Hey... Al. What's going on" Adam asked. Al ignored us and exited the room. "Holy shit" I say and stand up. "Yn, what's wrong" Jay asked. "Dr. Reybold, he was Voight's wife's doctor. And she um, she died a while back. Everyone thought it was her ovarian cancer. But what if she died because of Dr. Reybold?"
We then headed back to the district to get the case moving. Antonio brought in a woman from the law field to help us out. "We'll need documents, invoices. If the doctor ordered medicine overseas, the source country. Every piece of evidence counts. I need proof that Reybold acted with criminal intent. I need evidence he knew his actions could result in harm, but he acted anyway. Until you have that... no arrests. Is that clear" she asked us. "Let's do it" Voight said.
We went to Dr. Reybold's office and took him back to the station, but since we had no evidence that he was a killer, we had to let him go. We then interviewed all of the patients that Dr. Reybold had supposedly treated. And most of them were willing to testify against him. Apparently though, that wasn't enough to get him arrested for homicide. And about an hour after that, Jessica Pope, one of the victims at the hospital, passed away.
The trial for Reybold was held the next day. I couldn't attend because of other plans that I had, but I heard what happened. Voight testified against Reybold, and I guess he convinced the jury that Reybold was guilty. So the case was solved in the end. And it was because of the amazing Intelligence team from the 21st district.
