Yn's POV

"It feels good walking into work together" I say to Adam as we walked up the stairs to Intelligence. "I know. I never thought we'd be able to do this again" Adam said. "You all know Officer Rojas. Welcome to Intelligence" Voight said as Vanessa entered the office. "Thank you. I hope this isn't the part where I have to make a speech" she said. "Nothing like that. Okay, so, what do we got" Voight asked.

"It was a straight-up aggravated carjacking. The victim's name is Ruby Garcia. She's 24. She's at Chicago Med with head trauma. We lodged a BOLO on her stolen car, but there's nothing yet" Kim said. "We ran prints on our DOA John Doe. He's not in our system, and he had no wallet or ID" Hailey said. "That means we've got to ID his partner, so talk to your CIs. Let's get a list of everyone previously arrested for carjacking in that area. Kev, reach out to Major Accidents and start the paper" Voight said. "Yes, sir" Kevin replied. "We've been chasing a major cartel supply and we're dropping that for a carjacking" Jay asked. "The offender died while we were chasing him, so we own it. Let's just tie it off cleanly and quickly and move on" Voight said.

"Sergeant? What would you like for me to do" Vanessa asked. "I want you to head to Med and get a victim statement from this Ruby, and ride with Upton. You two are going to be partnering together. Jay, you'll ride with Yn for now" Voight said and headed into his office. "I think I'm going to really like this partner swap" I say. "What? But you used to be with me" Adam said. "Yeah, but you should know by now that you can't beat Jay" I say and place my arm on top of Jay's shoulder.

"One day I will surpass you" Adam said. "No you won't. Yn and I go way back. We've been best friends since before you joined the unit" Jay said. "Face it Adam. You just can't pass the relationship that we have" I say. "Well you and Jay can't pass the relationship that Kevin and I have" Adam said. "Hey dog, don't pull me into this" Kevin said.

"Hey, Sarge. So, it turns out Ruby's car was fitted with a high-end, fireproof drug trap, which is lucky for us because it preserved the drug residue inside, which the field test confirmed was heroin" Adam said. "So this wasn't a carjacking, it was a dope rip" Hailey said. "Exactly. The lab told us that the fingerprint found inside this trap is definitely Ruby Garcia's" Kevin said. "Okay, which means Ruby wasn't some innocent girl who got her car jacked. She's a drug runner" Vanessa said. "Jay, Yn, go scoop her up" Voight said. "Copy that" I say.

As soon as Jay and I pulled up to the house, someone started yelling. "Somebody help! Help" a man shouted. We ran down the gangway, and I could see Ruby's body slouched against the back fence. "Hey! What'd you see" Jay asked the man who shouted for help. "Somebody ran that way" he said and pointed down the alley. I bent down next to Ruby as Jay pulled out his radio. 5021 George. Roll one ambo to the 7300 block of Hamilton" Jay said. "Copy that. 5021 George" the person on the other end said. "Cancel the ambo. She's gone" I say.

That night, I knew I had to talk to Adam about what was going on, and how we were going to have another addition to the family in a few months. I also had the perfect way to tell him, which calmed my nerves down a little bit. I brought a medium sized white box into the living room where Adam was sitting on the couch. "Hey babe. What's that" he asked and nodded to the box. "It's for you" I say as I sit down on the couch next to him.

"For me? What's the occasion" Adam asked me. "Just open the box" I say. Adam took the lid off the box, and inside was a chalkboard. The chalkboard read, "Daddy's backup is in route. Baby Ruzek is expected to arrive in February." As soon as Adam read the chalkboard, he cupped my face in his hands and kissed me gently. "I can't believe it. We're going to be parents. How far along are you" Adam asked and rested his forehead against mine. "About 5 weeks now" I say. Adam smiled and pressed another kiss to my lips. "I can't wait to tell the team tomorrow" he said.

The next morning, Adam and I walked into the office hand in hand. This was it. It was time to tell the whole unit, minus Jay, that I was pregnant. That did mean I wouldn't be able to go out for as much case work anymore, but I knew that it was time to play it safe. "Guys. We've got an announcement to make" Adam said. The whole unit stopped what they were doing and turned to look at us. "Ready" Adam asked me. I nodded and took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant" I finally say.

The first person to congratulate me and hug me was Kim, who smiled broadly as she squeezed me. Everyone else hugged me after that, including Voight. He had basically become my second father while I was up here, so to know that he approved made me happy. "I'm happy for you Ln. You deserve this" Voight said. "Thanks Sarge" I say.

"Alright, so, what do we got" Voight asked. "We ran Ruby Garcia. She's got two priors. One was coke and the other one was selling joints to an undercover when she was 16. She spent time in Juvie. She has no biological family, she was given up for adoption and grew up in foster care. It looks like she had a hard life" Kim said. "And a short one" Vanessa added. "M.E.'s confirmed that Ruby was stabbed with a serrated knife. They also found this on her torso" Hailey said and put a picture of a burn mark up on the board. "That's a brand. It looks like the letter F" Kevin said.

"All right, run this through the Detective Bureau, see if they've come across anything similar" Voight said. "Well, I spoke to the Crime Lab. They pulled the data from Ruby's GPS. Mostly non-descript, normal driving around the city stuff, but there's one outlier, this neighborhood in the Wild 100s" Adam said and put a map on the board. "She went there four times in the last month, including right before she got jacked." "Well that's got to be where the weight is kept. She was picking up dope from a source" Jay said. "Right, so dig in, talk to your CIs. Find out who's moving heroin in that area and find out who Ruby was working for" Voight said.

The team went out on a bust, and because I had announced to the unit that I was pregnant, I couldn't go. They came back with a Jose Soto, whose younger brother Frank was just here earlier as a prime suspect. "We checked Soto's alibi. Three people put him at his brother's game" Hailey said. "He could've hired the hit" Kevin suggested. "Maybe, but we don't have any proof of that" Hailey said. "All right, so Soto gave us the number he was using to communicate with this mystery dealer. It was a burner phone. It went dark, so I wasn't able to track that, but I did track where it was purchased at Jin's Market in Pilsen three days ago" Adam said. "Alright. Jay and Yn, go pay this Jin a visit" Voight said.

"So this is all the surveillance of three days ago? People buying pay-as-you-go phones" Jay asked Jin. "Yes. I remember two men bought phones that day. Here is the first one" Jin said and stopped the footage as a man in a wheelchair purchased a phone. "Who's the second guy" Jay asked. "This guy" Jin said and stopped the video on another older man. "Can you rewind" I ask Jin. "Yeah" he said and started rewinding the footage. "Okay, stop" I say. Jin stopped the video just as a women purchased a burner phone. "We're looking for a man" Jay said. "Says who" I ask. "Do you recognize her" Jay asked me. "I do. Kim showed me a photo of her the other day. That's Ruby's boss" I say.

"The burner used to do the drug buys was purchased by Alexa Rivera. She's 42 and she's not on DEA's or Narcotic's radar. Based on the amount of heroin we think she bought from Soto, she should be" Jay said. "Before she started a restaurant, Alexa was a social worker. She taught a vocational training class for at-risk youth. Ruby was one of her students" I say. "She's got two priors. One for possession, one for agg-battery. She broke the eye socket of her live-in girlfriend" Jay said. "So, what are we waiting for? Let's bust her" Vanessa said. "Based on what" Voight asked. 

"Ruby was running drugs for Alexa, who has a history of violence, so when Ruby lost her load, it makes sense she killed her. Street justice" Vanessa said. "Well, it's a very good theory, but so far we've got no evidence Alexa murdered Ruby. What we do know is Alexa's in the drug trade. So let's catch her dirty. We'll take her off the street, then build a murder case" Voight said. "She might not be holding, being her supply just got ripped" Adam said. "Right. There's an opening, which means she's looking for product. I say we lay somebody under with the bait, Sarge. See if she bites" Kevin said. "All right. Let's do it" Voight said.

As soon as I went to start digging up more information, Voight stopped me. "Can we talk" he asked. "Let me guess. You want me to take the case off because this could get serious" I say. Voight nodded, and I sighed before grabbing my jacket. "Fine" I say. "That's it? No argument or anything" Voight asked me. "I knew this was coming sooner or later Sarge, so I'm just going to accept it" I say. "All right Ln. Enjoy the next few days or so off" Voight said. "Thanks Sarge" I say.
