Chapter Three: Recovery

My feet grew sore as I stopped to catch my breath. My breath was heavy and I was panting like a dog. I had been running for so long now but I still found no trace of him. Where was he? What was he thinking?

He had always called me an idiot but now he’s the idiot. He was being stupid, reckless and not to mention stupid! I couldn’t believe he wouldn’t even confront me about this. What was his deal? Doesn’t he know he can trust me?

I slapped my head with my hand to stop the questions. I didn’t need to think right now. None of this mattered. As long as he was safe and out of danger nothing else matters. That’s what I kept telling myself anyway but the questions still rang in the back of my head.

I just threw my legs forward again and began running forward. The whole world around me suddenly began to spin as I leaned on the wall beside me on the street to regain my senses. I had stopped twice now so there was no way I could find him. I cursed under my breath and slammed my fist into the wall.

“Where are you?” I asked, whispering it to myself.

A little trickle of blood dripped down my knuckles and I released it from the wall. A small hole now formed where my fist collided with the brick. I wiped the blood off on my jacket to realize there was already a splotch of blood there. I put my hand on it and looked at the red texture.

I opened the inside of my jacket and took off my uniform vest and tie. I examined where the blood was coming from and found that a bullet was lodged in my skin. One of those bullets earlier must’ve hit me. That’s what I get for saving an idiot, I guess.

The strange thing was it took me this long to realize it. If I was a normal human I would’ve died by now. Although I am far from being normal. My skin is so dense that it takes a long time for injuries to take effect. It’s almost like a shield.

The only defect in this “so-called shield” is that the injury still exists and can get worse over time without me knowing it. I don’t feel as much pain either. I gently pulled out the bullet and put my hand over it to keep the blood from spilling. What was I gonna do now?

I ripped open my white tank and put it overtop of the wound. It wasn’t very thick but it would work for now. I had to find a doctor fast before this injury killed me but I couldn’t help but wonder if Britain had got to safety. I needed time to myself so I had to leave the useless chase alone for now.

I slowly limped my way over to the quickest doctor and found myself resting for more hours than I have gotten to sleep in the past week. I slept for roughly about 48 hours and my body was so tired that I could hardly move an inch. I had never had that good a rest before so it felt good to finally get the sleep I needed.

I yawned and stretched my arms and legs as I sat up. I examined my wound and realized it was no longer patched up. I looked upward to see a nurse in a white uniform walk into the room. She smiled brightly and looked closely at her clipboard.

“Well Alfred it looks like you’ve gotten better already. Your wound is completely healed and that fever you were running has faded away completely. You heal fast for a human. You are free to leave if you wish.” she explained.

“Thanks. I didn’t know I could sleep that much.” I joked.

We both shared a laugh as I pulled the covers off me. I stood up and took a few minutes to regain the usage of my legs. I put my hands on my hips and looked up to the ceiling for a few moments to clear my head. I walked over to the nurse and I shook her hand.

She gave me my newly clean clothes and pointed toward the bathroom. I stepped in and when I saw that no one was around or in the stalls I quickly changed into my uniform. Stalls always annoyed me because they were so small so I decided if I had an opportunity not to use one I would.

I sighed as I put my hands under the sink. I turned the knob to release a cold rush of cold water. I collected a pool in my hands and splashed it on my face. It felt almost like dipping your head in a pool. It was a nice feeling that soothed me.

“You know you really shouldn’t hit on nurses like that, they could lose their jobs.” an annoyed voice called in the door.

“Hitting on her? You gotta be kidding. I was only being nice.” I explained as I stared at the entrance to the bathrooms.

I heard a scoff from the other side and something that sounded like a whatever but I couldn’t hear it over the sound of the rushing water. I turned the knob again to turn the water off so I could hear the voice more clearly.

“You also shouldn’t change out in the open like that. It’s quite a vulgar behavior that I would never teach to anyone.” the voice continued.

“No big deal. It’s not like anyone was around to see me. If your gonna spy on the people in the bathroom anyway doesn’t that make you some sort of pervert?” I asked.

I heard a few chosen curse words from the other side and a slam of the door as it opened. I was happy to see the face of the man I was arguing with. Everything becomes clear when you face your opponent. You can almost read their eyes.

“Now listen, you twat! I was just coming to use the bathroom and managed to see you. It was not my fault, but yours so quit blaming me!” he yelled again, this time right beside me.

I looked again into that deep clover green color. I smiled as I had found him again. A feeling so great I was never gonna forget it. I put my hands in my pockets and just kept staring at his face.

“You sure your not jealous?” I asked him, curiously

“Jealous of what? You? You’ve got to be joking! You’re even dumber than I thought!” he retorted as he turned his head.

I could see a hint of red on his cheeks at his embarrassment. He didn’t like being made fun of or argued with and most of all being proved wrong. I laughed at his anger and used it to fuel my happiness. He wouldn’t be Britain if he didn’t get angry.

Actually, I had to admit, it looked kinda cute when he blushed. He looked like a high school girl who had a crush. He must’ve liked that nurse allot. I didn’t think the high noble Englishman even had crushes. He was full of surprises.

“You should go talk to her if you like her. Don’t hesitate or she’ll slip away from you.” I told him.

I smiled as I opened the door and exited the bathroom. I walked forward, leaving him to himself. As long as I knew he was ok that’s all that matters. I didn’t have any further need to question him. It wasn’t my business to pursue his activities.

I opened the door to exit the hospital, taking one look back. I looked back to find those eyes staring at me. I shot my hand in the air with a wave as I turned back around. It made me wonder where this journey would take us next.
