the next morning san was bright and early. he needed to go shopping for groceries today, and he had a bit of money to do so.

he readies and puts on clean clothing along with his coat. he previously thumbtacked the slip of paper from woo above his key rack, and he smiles every time he sees it.

san leaves his apartment and he's off to the market around the corner. he opens the door to the shop and is greeted by the scent of freshly baked bread.

"good morning, ms. kim," he says to the aged lady behind the counter scanning different food products as they come on the conveyer belt. she looks up and smiles.

"ah, san," she gasps, and drops the package she held to hug san around the corner. "i've missed you, my boy, where have you been?"

"oh, i've been preparing for my new job," he lies. "i start soon."

"wow!" she exclaims, patting san on the shoulder blade. "where are you working?"

san blanks. he really should've thought this through. he was scared how ms. kim would react to him seeing a certain boy. he continues to stretch his lie, feeling more guiltiness bubble in his stomach.

"that's a surprise," he smiles. "i'll tell you after i finish my first day, yeah?"

"yeah, yeah!" ms. kim shouts, smiling and laughing loudly while her customers wait for her to stop dilly-dallying. "how about, i give you something for free today?"

"f-free?" san chokes. "ms. kim, t-there's no need."

"of course there is, my boy got a job!" ms. kim laughs. "pick what ya want. it's on me."

san smiles, bowing respectively to his elder. "well, thank you, ms. kim."

"ma pleasure," she pats his back again and finally resumes to ringing items. san is off to the isles to browse the selection and see what he needed.

"i didn't know you shopped here, san," a familiar voice says, scaring san as he selects a package of rice to take.

"oh my god, you scared me," he sighs, turning to face a blonde, smiling boy, wearing an olive green apron covered in rice flour, the same as his mother's. hongjoong kim.

"choi san!" hongjoong shouts, hugging the other and covering him in rice flour. san didn't mind though, he wasn't going anywhere else.

"kim joong!" he shouts back, squeezing the older excitedly. "how have you been man?"

"pretty good, pretty good," hongjoong and san separate. "i've started my community college classes last week."

"congrats, dude," san high fives the other's hand. "how is it?"

"pretty nice, met another guy who's really nice," says hongjoong. "pretty cute, if you ask me."

"oh," san cooes, punching hongjoong in the shoulder lightly. "looks like you have a crush."

"yeah, yeah," hongjoong's face turns a light shade of pink, but san ignores it. "i have to get back to work, but it was nice seein' ya."

"nice seein' ya, too," san says. "catch you later."

the two part and san is back to trying to select the cheapest package of rice. he walks about the market for a bit and picks up a few vegetables and a package of meat before checking out.

ms. kim rings up each item as san counts his change, and the total's around eleven dollars.

san pulls a ten out. "i don't have enough, ms. kim."

"i said one item was free, so it's your pick," she says, pointing to the bagged items.

"i said it wasn't necessary, ms. kim-"

"oh shut up, boy." she laughs as he removes the package of meat from the purchase. "7.53."

san shakes his head and hands her the money. guilt still bubbles in his stomach as he lets her give him free items for obtaining a job he really didn't. but as broke as he was, he really needed it.

he takes his bag and hugs ms. kim and hongjoong once more before leaving the market, assuring he'll visit more once he was time.

he goes back home, slipping his shoes of and falling back onto his couch, guilt still causing his stomach to ache.
