October 19 6:00 ; Matthew

"Matthew, wake up. There was something in the post office box." I was shaken by the person to the right of my bed.

"Go away." I push their face away.

"No, I'm serious Matt. You really need to see this."

I slowly turn over onto my back and open my right eye. Mya is standing there with a white package in her hand along with a paper with scribbled letters. I open my left eye and grab the package and paper from her.

'Dear, Matt

Today is my grandaughters birthday, and I was wondering if you could give this to Ashley. It's sad that I won't be there but say that it was from you and I both. Her present is in the package that I sent. I hope you have a wonderful day.

-Linda Davis'

I furrow my eyebrows in confusion from the last sentence that I have read. I open the white little package while Mya still standing there besides my bed. I look up to Mya and say, "Uh, you can go now?"

"Whatever. hurry up and get ready." She rolls her eyes.

I wait when Mya closes the door behind her and I fumble with opening the package with my hands. Inside the package was a gold box with a teal colored bow on top of it. The name 'Ashley' was in cursive letters on a white tag that was attached to it.

I dread myself out of bed and slip my school uniform on with one of my hoodies since it was a little bit chilly today. I slid the gold box in the pocket of my hoodie and brush my hair through my fingers. I pick up my bag and phone and walk out of my room with Mya leaning against the hallway with her eyes glued to her phone screen.

"I still don't know how I get ready faster than you, and yet I'm a girl." Mya laughs lightly.

"Lets just go already." I mumble.

Mya hands me a pop tart in the car as soon as I turn the ignition on, and I unwrap the silver packaging and take several bites before I start to drive. Mya rolls her eyes when I take 3 more bites but I shrug and put the truck in reverse.

The drive to school was quiet as usual, Mya and I don't really get along. We're the kind of cousins that act like siblings so we always scream at each others faces for no apparent reason, I'm pretty sure shes the one that always starts it.

"wait, is that Ashley?" Mya hits the side of my arm.

"Where?"

"In that toyota car pulling into one of the spaces." She points out the window.

"She got a car?" I gape.

"It's better than yours." She sneers.

"That's because hers is brand new and mines is a year old."

"Whatever."

"Whatever." I mimic in high pitch voice.

"Just shut up Matt." She says while getting out of the truck.

I get out of my truck and I close it shut with my backpack on my back and my keys in my left hand. I lock my door and I jog all the way to Ashley's new car.

"Nice car." I pat the hood.

"Thanks." she says as she climbs out.

"Why don't you look excited?" I ask.

"I am excited."

"But your not smiling?" I furrow my eyebrows.

"I don't need to smile when I'm excited." She locks her car and I walk with her to the building.
