This is just so hard. My body seems tired but my eyes are awake. I have been laying down in this bed for the past 5 hours, thinking of many things.

Ashley, she's a mystery. And I'm willing to solve it. The first time I saw her walking into my AP physics class, she seemed so depressed. She had dark circles underneath her eyes and her entire body was slouching.

A couple days ago when we found that meadow, I just realized I have never seen a real smile from her. It was always a toothless smile or a small laugh, but I never saw her teeth before. It's like I never really saw her happy before and its been 2 weeks since she came to this school.

But when I heard her say those few words, "Happy. pure happiness." It made me happy to hear a person say they're happy when they talk to me or when they're around me.

Ashley is becoming much more stranger around me each day though. She would always mess up her words and her face would flush with embarrassment. She would often start to mumble and fidget with the hem of her collard uniform. I thought it was pretty adorable, actually.

Theres also 5 more days until Ashley's birthday. I haven't gotten her anything but I plan to make her 16th birthday, one of the best birthday's she has ever had.

Maybe I should get her a pair of shoes. It looks like she really needs them. Those beaten up converse doesn't look like they'll hold together any longer. Maybe I should just give her money. Then she'll buy whatever the hell she wants.

C'mon Matt, just close your eyes and sleep. It's that simple.

My grandmother once told me when I was a kid that if you are wide awake at night, there is a possibility that someone is dreaming about you.

I wonder who that could be.

"Now you know my life story."

"That's, so sad..."

"It gets better though. The first time I saw you, I realized I fell in love. I fell in love with you."

"I think I realized the same thing."

"Then say it."

"I love you. I love you with my entire heart. I love your brown eyes, I love the way you smile, I love how you can be so weird, I love how much of a kid you act like, I love how you don't care about anyone else's opinion. I love you."

"What are you doing?" I ask

"I'm writing my grandmother a birthday card." Ashley replies. I didn't even know that she was sleeping over.

"Oh that's nice of you." I smile.

"Yeah." she says while writing the last few words.

"when's her birthday?" I ask.

"19th." she replies while folding the flap of the envelope.

"same birthday as yours? I ask.

"Yup." she says then puts the envelope in her bag.

"Are you going to visit her?" I ask.

"Yeah, but I'm gonna take the bus."

"That might be dangerous because you're going by yourself."
