Sky heaved a huge sigh, catching Mason's attention from across the table.
"What's the matter?" he asked, pausing in his writing as he looked over at her.
"Maths sucks," she muttered in response, barely loud enough for him to hear.
Mason chuckled as he got up out of his chair and made his way around to her side of the table before sitting down in the chair beside her. "What's the matter?" he asked again.
"These logs... Logarithmics. They're so stupid. When will I ever need to use this knowledge?" Mason was used to Sky's complaining by now so he just shook his head and smiled. "Can I just skip these and hope they don't come up on the final exam? There's only a few days left anyway so maybe I should focus on perfecting the things I actually do understand."
Mason continued to shake his head. "That's not how this works," he said, reaching over to organise Sky's notes to help him explain things to her. "You're much smarter than you think. If you can understand basically everything apart from the logs, that's impressive. You should push yourself further."
He identified the problem Sky was struggling with and pulled over some of his own notes to help talk her through things. Sky tapped her pen impatiently on the table while Mason checked through his notes.
Eventually he'd had enough and grabbed Sky's hand to halt her incessant tapping. "Stop that," he said. He hadn't thought too much about it until his hand was actually grasping Sky's and they both froze without the other realising. They pulled apart almost simultaneously.
"Right, sorry," Sky said, dropping her pen on the table and placing her hands on her lap.
"Ah, sorry," Mason said at the exact same time, pulling his hands to the desk in front of him, clasping his fingers together as he sat there awkwardly for a moment. He pretended to run his eyes over his notes as though he was looking for something. "I could have just said something," he eventually said to fill in the silence.
"You could have," Sky muttered, rubbing the one hand that Mason had just grabbed with the other hand in thought.
"How about we take a break?" Mason suggested.
Sky sighed happily. "Sounds perfect," she said, getting to her feet.
"Ah, wait," Mason said, stopping Sky from walking away any further. He looked rather embarrassed as she focused her gaze on him; he rubbed the back of his head abashedly. "I actually had an idea for something we could do together."
"Oh, yeah?" Sky folded her arms as she sent him a scrutinising stare, all thoughts of the former situation forgotten. "And what would that be?"
Mason entwined his fingers nervously in front of him. "Well... I was walking through the grounds the other day and I stumbled upon... Well, it looked like a playground of some sort."
Sky knew the place he was talking about. It was a small section of their garden which had been dedicated to being a play area for her and Gale when they were younger. She hadn't been there since had Gale died.
And she wasn't about to go there again now.
She shook her head. "I'm not going."
Mason frowned, "Please? I don't want to go to a playground by myself, but it looked like so much fun..."
