The walk back to Sky's house was silent, with the two of them not having said anything at all since Mason's words to Sky as she'd hung off the side of the building. Mason's mind couldn't stop thinking of the unconscious men they'd left behind on the ground but after an initial sprint away from the building, they'd slowed to a walk, happy enough with their distance. But his cheeks burned up again just thinking about those words he'd said to Sky and since it was all Sky could think of herself, her cheeks had an almost permanent red tinge on them on the walk back. For once in her life, she was happy to be on the taller side so Mason couldn't be witness to that.
The first sound emitted was when Sky's house came into view and she let out a sigh.
"Cheer up, we'll get through it together somehow," Mason said to try to warm her up to him again. She just made a small grunting noise and nodded, still not saying anything.
Mason bit his lip as he held back a sigh, not sure whether he was agitated with himself or with her - or if he was agitated with them both.
They continued walking down the path to the front of the building in silence and Mason closed his eyes, wishing this awkwardness would just dissipate.
And it did - though not in the way he expected.
As they approached the building, Sky walked off the main path and away from him, clearly opting to go back up into her room the other way and this time he didn't hold back a sigh as she left his range, shaking his head.
Though he had to admit, the silence seemed even more deafening now he was walking the last stretch by himself.
He entered the main building only to be surprised by James standing just inside the entrance. He moved towards Mason before stopping once he realised who had just walked in.
"Mason. I thought you were Sky. Do you know where she is?"
He wasn't sure whether he should tell the truth or lie. "She should be up in her room. Isn't she there?" he asked, positive he was doing his best to tell the truth since Sky was a fast mover.
James nodded as he listened to Mason but then shook his head at his words. "She wasn't. Her mother and I both checked. Anyway, on another note," James said, moving his gaze to focus on Mason. "We have Sky's husband-to-be in the other room and we'd like you to be there when she meets him."
"Why do I need to be there?" Mason asked, a stone dropping in his gut as he wondered whether Sky's parents were using it as a way to make sure he knew she was off limits to him.
"To keep her under control should she immediately try something to get out of the situation, of course," James said. Then his attention moved from Mason to the stairs behind him "Ah, here they are."
Heather had clearly attempted to drag Sky by the scruff but had failed so Sky was sulking as she followed along behind her mother, clearly not having a great time at all. Mason tried to catch her eye, but it was to no avail - so without a word or a look of confidence in her, her parents led them into the room together.
The man was familiar to her, she knew that, but she couldn't place it. She scrutinised him in silence, no one else making a sound as though it would risk her as-of-yet calm analysis. And then a huge dog appeared by his side in her mind's eye and a flash of recognition crossed her face.
"I saw you at that event, didn't I? That dog one, way back last year in the second chapter. You had a massive dog with you."
He'd been nodding along with her words, but then confusion crossed his features. "The... second chapter?" Adam asked, not sure whether to be confused or amused so he went for both as he raised his eyebrows. "The second chapter of what, exactly?"
