 Chapter-35

“Man, your husband has some balls-” Amelia inhaled sharply, abruptly re-focusing on the conversation she had begun to tune out.

Her friend carried on oblivious- “I mean, letting that hunk escort you?” She let out a soft whistle under her breath, “either the man is seriously confident about his own looks or he trusts you a hell of a lot to not fall for that.”

Amelia let out a nervous laugh, suddenly remembering that her wedding had been a private affair with just her and Lucius’ family at the hacienda’s quaint little chapel. It hurt to realize that her friends thought Lucius to be so far beyond her league, but she had to admit that it would be hilarious when they finally realized that the hunk they were all salivating about was in fact, hers.

“Oh my god, I think Judy is trying to seal the deal here itself!”

Ignoring the titters that the comment elicited, Amelia glanced her husband’s way. She was somewhat relieved to realize that Lucius was just being polite and there was no real threat from Judy.

“Hey, you never said... how exactly do you know him?"

She grinned, “Ummm..I kind-a married him.”

“You’re kidding!”

She shook her head, loving the surprised hush that seemed to have fallen over the entire group at her revelation. She watched as every single one of them first looked at her before turning their gaze towards Lucius and back again.

“Why are all the good ones always off the market?” Someone whined and the air relaxed to teasing camaraderie again.

“Hey, Am?”

Mia turned, facing one of the few people who had known how she had felt about her match before meeting Lucius. She smiled at the long forgotten nickname. “Yeah?”

“You know I’m just looking out for you, right?”

She frowned, knowing this couldn’t be good. Nevertheless, she followed Miranda when she led her away from the group.

“Are you still unhappy with your match?”

“Of course not!”

“Good. Good, then can I ask, Am, what exactly are you doing?”

“Excuse me?”

“Are you working somewhere? All of us are…”

She blushed, shaking her head. Lately, it seemed like her entire world was centered on Lucius and their relationship.

“And he is very successful, isn’t he?”

She nodded uncertainly, not understanding where this was leading.

“How do you plan on holding his interest?” Miranda asked bluntly.

“What?”

“Look, you are newly weds... he dotes on you, that much is obvious. My question is, for how long? From what I can see, Judy is far more capable of holding his attention... I mean, he can talk to her about his cases and stuff, can he-?”

Mia didn’t need Miranda finishing her sentence to know what her friend meant. And this time when she looked over, all she could focus on was how engrossed they were in their conversation. Was she already losing him?

Cariño ? It always surprised her just how attuned Lucius was to her moods.

I’m okay. -She hastened to assure; suddenly glad for their silent bond. Murmuring her thanks to Miranda, she walked over.

“Hey.”

It felt like a little bit of heaven, how easily Lucius’ arms wrapped around her waist. She looked up to find herself staring into the confused grey-green depths of Judy’s eyes.

“Uh…hello.” Her former classmate’s voice reflected her confusion. She glanced between them. “So, I never got around to asking, how is it that you two know each other?”

Amelia failed to hide her blush as she felt her husband’s arm tightening its hold around her waist as he grinned at the questioner.

"She's my wife."

“Oh!” The surprise was evident before her friend recovered, “That’s great! Your wife and I have known each other since kindergarten… it’ll be lovely to catch up, right Amelia?”

She nodded, not wanting to appear rude.

“And I would love to pick your brain some more, if you don’t mind… So, umm… are you guys free today evening? We could meet up for dinner. My treat.”

And Mia saw red. Part of it was Miranda’s words still echoing in her head, but the biggest issue was that she knew that she would be relegated to being a third wheel at the dinner.

Before Lucius could answer, she smiled sweetly at Judy- all the while picturing ways of killing the backstabbing home-wrecker- “We would love to-” she saw the smile blossom on her face before continued, “But you know how busy Lucius is… maybe some other time, huh?”

She could see the shock on Judy’s face. Knew that she had effectively said ‘never’ to her invite, but she could not bring herself to care- For now Lucius was hers. And she would find ways to ensure his attention never strayed, but till then she could not afford to have him discover that her friends were better suited for him.

                                                   **************************************

It wasn’t until they were back in the car and driving away that she realized that Lucius had not said a single word since she declined Judy’s invite. Her throat dried up- had she made the wrong decision?

Almost as if picking up on her thoughts, Lucius cleared his throat- but he wasn’t listening in. She would have felt him in her mind if he had.

“I didn’t realize you were so embarrassed of me, Cariño.”
