"Oh, can you?"
Deya's chocolate orbs scrutinized their shocked faces, eventually settling on the devil.
"Not so easy to ignore me now, is it?" She noted hurtfully, unable to forget how he ran away from the funeral.
"I think I should--" Dylan apparently got the cue, and started to stand up which didn't go that well with his boss.
"No" The devil's orbs didn't leave the girl for a millisecond, and the atmosphere was becoming suffocating. "You're staying. She goes"
"Ummm" Deya's brow furrowed as she put on a pensive frown. "Nope, I don't think so"
She could see Max's fists clench, the knuckles going completely white. But if she could win an impromptu boxing match on the day of her father's funeral, she can sure handle this.
Right?
"In fact, I'm actually quite hungry" With slow deliberate steps, her little frame approached the table and dumped the snacks she was holding on its top.
Grabbing the chips, she hardly got to rip the bag open before the devil sprang up and turned towards the door.
However, the girl remained unfazed.
"As you wish" She noted with mouth full of food. "But say goodbye to any chances of knowing who kidnapped me"
The impact was immediate. She didn't even have to look up to know his tall frame stopped abruptly, the sudden silence being interrupted only by her crunching.
It was also then that she started to doubt the decision. Sure, it forced him to stay in the room. But is it a good idea to come clean? There were about thousand ways the conversation could go.
"You wanted to talk, then talk" Max murmured coldly while walking over and taking a seat next to her.
And it looks like it doesn't go well at all.
"Yes," She swallowed the lump in her throat while fidgeting with the tablecloth. "But before I do--"
"Here we go" The devil breathed out with a bitter chuckle, and the girl shot him a dumbfounded look.
"It's never easy with you, is it?" His eyes bore into her soul, and suddenly she felt the tears fill her eyes to brim again.
"I-I just.."
Great, now I'm stuttering?
"What is it? What do you want in exchange?" The devil's irritation grew, and she wondered how did he get to the conclusion. "Let me guess, your freedom?"
There was a moment of silence as he stared her down with indecipherable expression, and she considered going along with it just to avoid talking.
"Actually, I wanted to thank you for what you did for my father... with the hospital, and funeral.. and all" Although she meant the words, it was impossible to maintain eye contact and so she focused on the flowers in the centre of the table. "I know you didn't have to do it.."
There was a short pause, and she started to think the devil will ignore it, but then his gravely voice echoed.
"You might not believe that, 'cause, in your words 'cold hearted beasts like me don't just care', but I actually liked Martin" Instantly, her cheeks turned crimson. She had no recollection of saying the words, but it must have been during her blind rage in the hospital.
No surprise he's avoiding me.
"Whatever I did was for him" Max added eventually, and she resorted to a curt nod, trying to mask her hurt. "Now speak"
