Victoria has been sitting in the café for about ten minutes when the devil deigned to show up. However, just one glance into the ice cold eyes let her know something is terribly wrong.
The excited spark that used to appear once he saw her was nowhere to find, and his whole posture was stiff, which instantly threw the girl off. How do I even greet him in a mood like this?
She slowly stood up and pondered. Do I hug him? Go for a kiss on the cheek? Shake his hand?!
But the problem promptly solved itself when the man ignorantly walked past and sat down.
Well, that works too I guess.
"Hey" Her voice whispered softly, and she received a curt nod in response.
For the next few minutes, the two just silently observed each other while lost in their own thoughts, but the waiter that came to take their order put a stop to that.
"What's wrong?" Victoria blurted out once the man left, and Max's eyes looked up to her in disbelief.
What?
"Nothing" The tone of his voice seemed to be telling her she should know well what's wrong, but no matter how hard she tried, nothing crossed her mind.
"Why are we here?" She tried again just to break the uncomfortable silence.
"I wanted to see you" The man shrugged while maintaining the stone cold façade.
What is his deal?
She really tried to tell herself the words are a sign the mission is not over yet. Nonetheless, the way he said them instantly sent shivers down her spine, and that couldn't be a good thing.
His lips parted to say more, but right then his phone rang and distracted him.
"Yes?" He growled into the device, and Victoria couldn't help but curse all this modern technology.
What was he about to say?
She got so distracted that the rest of his conversation became a buzz, and it wasn't until she saw him stand up that she realised the call successfully cut their date short.
"Where you going?" It was hard to mask the disappointment as she looked up to him from her seat.
Connor won't be happy about this.
"Something came up" Max excused himself bluntly while putting on his jacket.
"With your business?" Victoria refused to give up before getting at least some information to appease the boss.
But it was useless.
"No" Max spitted angrily, his eyes mercilessly burning into her soul.
"Oh, ok" The emerald eyes filled with tears to the brim. "Will I see you again?"
It felt strange finding herself in the devil's position. Vulnerable and rejected. Whatever happened has noticeably shifted the power to his side.
Is this my karma for agreeing to Connor's plan?
"I don't know. It might take a while till I deal with this" He waved his phone in the air as if it was enough to explain.
"Call me then?" The girl hated herself for the desperation in her voice, but she just couldn't give up.
If there's anything I can do to protect my father..
"We'll see" Max crushed her hopes instantly before turning around and walking away without looking back.
