Friday, December 16th, 2011 | Formal {Prom}, Western Australia| Carson {18} and Sienna {16}

The front door slammed shut. You look up and smile at Sienna. “Hey how was school?” You ask, turning your attention back to the tv.

“Don’t ask.” She muttered, plopping herself down next to you on the floor.

You paused the game and turn to her. “What happened?”

“Nothing that I want to talk about,” she huffed. “How was your day?”

“Sienna, you can’t ovoid the question.”

“Yes, I can, Carson.” She matched your tone.

“Sienna,” You began, but she burst into tears. “Shit… Sienna, come here.” You say pulling her against you, she didn’t strain against you… she just accepted the hug and dropped her head into your shoulder.

She began to speak, but her tears choked her voice up making her sound inaudible. You feel your shirt dampen from her tears and your grip on her tightens. “I’m sorry.” She mumbles into your shirt. “I shouldn’t’ve lost it like that.” She pulled away from you.

“It’s fine… do you want to talk about it?”

“No, not really.”

You nod your head; that is all you will get from her. She stood up and started walking out of the lounge room.

“Do you know where Alex is?” She said, turning around.

“Yeah, he just went to work to pick up his truck.”

“Why?”

“He was pimping it up for your formal tonight.” You say hesitantly.

She laughed softly. “When you see him, tell him that I am not going.” She started to walk away again, but you stopped her.

“Whoa. Sienna, wait.” You chased her, but she kept walking. You continued to chase her into her room. “Sienna.” She just stared at you, from her bed.

“What’s wrong, and don’t tell me you don’t want to talk about it…because- tough luck, I do.”

“Carson, you don’t understand.”

“What don’t I understand, Sienna?” You sounded angry, god she made you so angry sometimes. “I have been here for you and with you basically my whole life. I know you like I know the back of my hand, so don’t you dare start saying that I don’t understand you…that I don’t know you.”

She just looked at you shocked. You never speak to her like that…ever. She was stunned into silence. “My date, Mark, he pulled out of the formal thing…”

“Is that all?” You say insensitively, and you instantly regret it.

“He said he didn’t want to take a, fucking, orphan.” She retorted.

“Shit.” You breathe.

“So, Carson, do you understand? Do you understand what it is like to be rejected based on… nothing that matters? Do you understand how it feels? Do you know how hard it is for me to find a guy that likes me in this town? Let alone someone who could take me on a date, because if he really liked me you or Alex would make it your damn life mission to freak him out and scare him away! Forgive me, if I am a little upset, a little angry, a little not fucking sure of how I feel!” She practically screamed at you.

“I’m sorry. I really am.” You pause, thinking of what to say next. “But if I am completely honest, Alex and I do what we do…scare away guys…because they aren’t good enough. No one is good enough for you, well, not in this town anyway.”

“I’m scared, Cars.” She whispered.

“Why?” You walk over to her, and sit next to her. “What do you have to be afraid of?”

“Ending up alone. Ending up having no one around to love me, ending up living the remainder of my life in this god forsaken town with no family, no friends. No one, to love me.”

“I love you.” You slip out.

“I know, but, one day you will have a family, kids. Your books will be international best sellers and you and your perfect family will live in the out skirts of the city away from all this… this hell.”

What do you say to her? Finally you decided on. “We will get out of here.”

“You will; me…not so much.”

“I promise you Sienna, I will get you out of here.”

“But what about you? What do you want?”

“I don’t know.” You pause. “Actually, I want to take to your formal.” You smile and she mirrors your action.

“Really? You don’t have to.”

“No I want to, I mean it has been a life time dream.”

“What taking someone to their formal?”

“No, taking a beautiful girl to her formal.”

Two hours later your mother had finally finished Sienna’s make- up and hair. And you two were all set to go; you wore your suit and had just ducked back into town buying Sienna some flowers. They were pale pink roses, your mother told you to buy them; she said that they were Sienna’s favourite…but you already knew that.

“Okay she is ready boys,” your mother said, walking down the stairs to meet Alex and yourself.

“How does she look?” Alex asked, just as Sienna began the decent of the stairs.

Your breath… was gone. Your blood…rushed to your face. Your palms… transformed into an ocean. Your face… lit up with a smile.

She was beautiful, she was your Sienna.

She always will be.
