The vampire MG steps off the bus first. Students roam the quad before Mystic Falls High School. Everyone stares at him like he is an alien from another planet.
Next, Hope walks down—the teacher for the field trip. She would not let the students go alone, or so she tells them. In reality, Alaric decided she had to go. Plus, she won't let Landon out of her sight.
Then, Stella stumbles out of the bus. Her expression says it all—she does not want to be back in regular high school. She just escaped. But now she is forced to spend the day with the people she dislikes most. Or, better yet, she is forced to spend the day without the person she really wants to be with.
Then comes the vampire Kaleb. This is where he feels most comfortable—surrounded by normal students. His stomach churns at the amount of human blood around him.
Lizzie struts off the bus, her blonde hair swinging in the breeze. The permeant smirk on her face makes Stella want to glare. As Hope said before, Lizzie Saltzman battles one gargoyle and she thinks she's Mother Theresa.
Finally, Landon gets off the bus. He keeps his head down, avoiding the bullies who once harassed him. Stella keeps a close eye on him as he interrupts Lizzie's superhero strut. "Sorry," he says.
"I was making an entrance, mophead," Lizzie snaps as the group gathers in a circle.
"Sorry, I just had a flashback to freshman year," Landon says, his eyes carefully avoiding the jocks.
Before Lizzie can berate him, Stella says, "Ignore it, Lizzie. Let it go."
The blonde huffs and crosses her arms. "Ok, here's the deal. Landon, you talk to any of the people you still know from when you went here. Hope and Stella, you try to not alienate the entire student body while the rest of us save the world."
Stella clenches her jaw and lets out a bitter laugh. "You do realize that our parents are the only reason you stand here, right?"
"This is not a contest," Hope says. Stella can tell that her cousin really wants to punch Lizzie Saltzman. Stella might even help.
"You're right," Lizzie admits. "This is a mission." She places her hands on her hips. "For a hero and her league of..." Her eyes move over the rest of the group. "Whatevers."
"Screw that, I work alone," Kaleb says. Without another word, he walks off.
"Great," Stella mutters. "Lone vampire in a sea of humans."
"MG," Lizzie turns to the vampire. His eyes light up when she smiles at him. "I will need your compulsion skills. Will you be the Robin to my Batwoman?"
"Actually, Batwoman doesn't have a Robin," MG replies. "She—"
"Metaphor, nerd. Let's go." Lizzie wraps her arm around the vampire and leads him into the school. Now, only the three outcasts remain.
"I have an idea," Stella says. "I know public schools. Hope, you can investigate the teachers, see what kind of students Dana and Sasha were."
To her credit, Hope does not argue. She nods with a sigh and mutters, "Better than Lizzie's plan."
"And Landon," The boy's eyes widen. "you're stuck with me, ok? We need to talk."
Hope's eyes widen as Stella begins to drag the boy away. "Stella—"
"Don't worry, dearest cousin," Stella calls back. "I promise he'll be recognizable after I'm through."
"Oh, god," Landon groans as they walk into the school. "Ok, what do you want to do to me?" They pass a lab and the students stare at them through the door. "Stuff me in a locker? Because I've been in every one except..." He moves to the side, banging on locker 523. "This one. It doesn't open. If you're into bathrooms, the one to the right is where I had my first kiss with a toilet—"
