--------"Yvie, dear , how are you?" a very concerned voice rattled through the air. "My dear, please say something. Oh, I told your father this was madness. My ... our, only daughter going to live in a far off town. Honey, you know that you are always welcome to come home any time." Mrs. Meyers sounded off whilst her daughter, Yvonne, drummed her fingers against the steering wheel of her car.
"Yvie , dear, the horrors I have heard. Why so far away and it such a secluded place. You could be killed, or raped! And your father and I would not even know! "Mrs. Meyers continued, hoping she could drill some sense into her daughter. Yvie continued to drum her fingers, trying not to laugh at her mother's concern.
One thing Yvie learned in her lifetime, never argue with her mother. It was pointless. Trying to argue with her mother was like trying to get jam out of a stone , nothing came from it. So , instead of arguing with her mother, she just kept quiet , until her mother stopped arguing.
"Oh, well , I have to go. Your father says that he loves you and will call you later. Please be safe. Love you, bye. " her mother said. Giving up trying to convince Yvie to change her mind about moving to the ghost town, for the time being.
Yvie chuckled as her mother ended their call.
Yvie could understand her mothers concerns. She knew her mother was not going to be happy with her moving to a ghost town.
The big move was not something that Yvie had planned. Yvie had planned on going to University. However, when her acceptance letters came through, Yvie had a change of heart.
She had always had this deep connection with ghost towns. As long as she could remember, whenever she saw a ghost town, her heart would beat just a little bit slower. Her eyes would tear up and her mind would race. Her thoughts would be filled with broken images, flitting through her mind. Images of what the town was like before it took up the state of "nothingness".
So, when she saw those acceptance letters, she had an epiphany. She realised that maybe the reason as to why she was so obsessed with ghost towns, was because she felt like her entire existence was slowly turning into a ghost town.
She decided then and there that she would do something spontaneous, something exciting. She knew that going straight to University was not a option. As the acceptance letters lay domant in her inbox, she began searching for something to do. She was not sure exactly what. But, she knew it was going to be life changing.
The hardest part of that whole month, was telling her parents that she would not be going to Univeristy.
Her mother had a riot. Broke down in tears and would not speak to anybody. Her father was quiet. Too quiet. He was a man of few words, but his silence emphasised his disappointment in Yvie.
When her parents finally realised that Yvie was not going to give up the notion of not going to University, they slowly started accepting her decision. By that time, Yvie had already found her destiny.
She saw an advertisement online. It was for a small cottage that was being rented out in Harrisville. Harrisville was a ghost town nestled in between dewy mountains, lovely cherry-blossom trees , vivacious greenery and a luxurious sense of freedom.
When she told her parents about her wanting to move to the ghost town, that's where they drew the line. They gave her an ultimatum. She could only live there for a year, after that , she should re-apply for University. If she stayed for more than a year, she would be cut -off from them.
Now, Yvie did not necessarily believe them when they made that statment. However, something had a told her ( her conscience perhaps) that she should not defy her parents. So, she accepted their ultimatum.
So, before her parents changed their minds, she emailed the advertiser for the cottage. Luckily nobody had brought up an offer yet, so the cottage was all hers.
The day before her great trek to Harrisville , her mother burst into tears. Her father seemed overwhelmed and distraught, though he tried to hide it.
She knew her parents would have a hard time digesting her departure. She was their only child. However, she never expected the waterfall of emotions that would rush over her. She was a whirlwind of emotions. She became trapped between being excited and happy , nervous and sad.
When she turned on her engine the day she she left her parents house, she nearly turned around. But, the open road seemed to call her. Her heart seemed to yearn some great escape.
So she started her engine. With one last kiss and wave to her parents. Made her way to her ghost town.
