Asthe song ended Yvonne Meyers was in a state of despair. The more she listened to the song that Steven played because it was his parents favourite song, the more she felt uneasy.
She kept on replaying how Ms. Lila had sung it. So to clear her head, she tried thinking about her 1 and a half days in the city. She and Steven had just left the city and on their way back to Harrisville.
Her mother and father have both been calling her non-stop ever since she ran out of the house. She could not bring herself to answer their calls. She knew that she might be over reacting. People divorce all the time. It just affected her more than she ever imagined it would. The fact that they lied to her and never even mentioned it to her, was what made her even more mad.
Thinking about what had been happening for the past few days, just made her weary. So, she decided to ask Steven something she had been wondering ever since she met both Matthew and Brandon.
"If you don't mind me asking, how did you and Matthew become friends with Brandon? I mean, he just seems so unlike the 2 of you. I like him and all, but he is just so drastically different from the 2 of you." Yvie asked as the sun began to dip under the clouds.
Steven laughed lightly and said, "You know, everyone always asks us that. However, the Brandon you know today , is not the Brandon we grew up with. Matthew and myself have been friends for as long as I can remember. Brandon was always the , how can I say this? Weider, emo-ish kid that always had his nose in a book. He is really clever, you know. He actually got this scholarship to study at some fancy German maths and science school for University, but he never accepted it. He had applied for it, but he changed his mind last minute. Anyways, Brandon used to get bullied a lot by the other boys in Primary school. You know, he was just so different and he was an easy target because nobody really stuck up for him. Then , one day, Matthew got between him and this boy who was beating the crap out of him and ever since then , we have been buddies."
Yvie took a moment to let everything that Steven just revealed, sink in. All the questions popped into her mind. She decided to ask the one question that stood out to her, "Brandon is a mini Einstein? Wow. I really should not just a book by its cover." She stated.
"Yeah. That university's a pretty big deal. They only take about 30 students from across the world. He had applied for it, but I really do not know what had changed his mind. Any maths or science question you might have, he has an answer for it. The worse thing in the world is watching a science fiction movie or T.V show with him, he always complains about how "unscientific" it is." Steven replied as he tried it shield his eyes from the last harsh rays that peaked through of the setting sun.
"So, when did he change from the "emo" look, to the normal, douchebag look?" Yvie asked, causing Steven to snort.
"It happened in grade:10. It was actually unexpected. He just came one day to school dressed "normally". He had not told neither me nor Matthew. It came as a shock to all of us." Steven said as he tapped his fingers on the steering to the tune of the song currently playing.
Yvie nodded her head. She tried to process all this new information. It was unsettling, the way Steven explained how Brandon used to be. It did, however, change her view of him. She no longer just saw him as a flirtatiuos idiot. He was now a flirtatiuos genius. She was not entirely sure if that was an improvement, though.
They both settled into a peaceful silence as the sun said goodbye and let the moon take over its shift. The stars seemed to be holding more secrets that evening. Yvie felt as if her whole world, was now slightly bigger. She had so much more emotions and so much more feelings exposed to herself.
Just as she was about to fall into sleep, Steven started to speak. "The crazy things we used to get up to as kids. I remember this one time , Brandon decided to spray paint this one mural on high school. Matthew and I were initially against it, but Brandon set a compelling reason for us to do it. We broke into our school in the middle of the night and we worked for about 3 hours on it. It was this stupid sign that Brandon saw somewhere. God,the trouble we got into for that. I was surprised that we were not expelled. I would have expelled us. We were truly rascals. We used to egg the local polices trainees vehicles, too. That one actually got us into real trouble. Violating police vehicles was a bad idea. It was a good thing Brandon was so sleek. I swear, that dude can sell ice to people in Antarctica. "His voice was laced with nostalgia.
Yvie smiled when she saw Steven's beaming smile. She was slightly bummed. For , she did not have such a exotic childhood. She was the type child that dotted all her i's and crossed all her t's. She was a module student.
Now, after hearing about Steven's childhood , she felt like she had wasted so many years trying to be perfect that she never made time to make actual memories.
However, she made a vow, that from that moment onwards, she would strive to make memories and not just live.
