chapter twenty - one: silliness and laughter

The rain stormed down as the lighting flashed and the thunder boomed. It was a harmonious piano piece that echoed through Harrisville.

Yvonne Meyers watched with worry as Tracy Williamson and Brandon Walker ran through the rain and jumped into puddles. Their arms thrashed about, making the rain splatter around them like teardrops.

"I swear only those two will somehow get Scarlet fever  from running in the rain like this.  They will be the only adults to acquire a bacteria that affects only young children  and teenagers." Matthew Williamson  remarked. Steven Tarintiono and Yvie nodded their heads in agreement.

Steven,  Matthew  and Yvie were standing under a tree, trying not  to get wet. Yvie was starting to regret ever agreeing to doing this.

Brandon had heard on the news that the Halley's Comet would enter the earths solar system that night. So he had the ingenious plan to drag them all along so that he could have his geek moment. Initially , Yvie thought it was cute. His eyes sparkled as he explained that this comet only entered the earths solar system every 75/76 years. 

However, now she was just mad and cold. It was not supposed to rain that night. It was not Brandons fault that it rained.  He was not in control of the weather. Yet, Yvie was still mad at him. She and Steven were planning a date-night in her house. It was going to be a candle light dinner and a movie. It sounded like heaven to Yvie. Their plans changed when Steven came rushing through her house begging them to come with him, Matthew and Tracy to "Witness a once in a lifetime" expose. 

They were now being exposed to a torrential downpour. Whilst Tracy and Brandon was having a grand ol' time in the rain, Yvie just sighed. The comet was meant to enter the solar system and earth at 11 PM. Yvie looked at her watch, an half an hour remained. 

Brandon and Tracy's giggles wavered through the wind. Despite herself, Yvie smiled. They looked so carefree and without a second thought, she ran from her protective zone and into the rain.

When the rain first hit her slightly warm body, she let out a small sound of shock. However, as the rain fell harder on her , the rain and cold felt like a natural massage all over her body. She did not get much time to appreciate the sensation, for not long after she entered the rain, stormed Brandon and Tracy towards her , laughing.

Tracy , with a jubilant voice shouted, "Out of all the stuck-up elderly people under that tree, you were the  one, I must admit, that I never expected to actually run in the rain." 

Tracy's statement caused Brandon to snort with laughter. Yvie rolled her eyes, bent down, picked up some mud and threw it at Tracy.  It had landed straight on Tracy's face, some even landed  in her mouth.

Both Brandon and Tracy stared at Yvie, mouths agape in shock. Both were surprised and taken a -back by Yvie's action. However, Tracy seemed to recover quick and shouted to  Yvie with a voice laced with vengence, "Oh, it's on, Ms. Yvonne Meyers!".

Before Yvie could reply, mud was slung her way. She managed to duck just in time. However , before she had time to regroup her thoughts and plan her next attack , she felt the soft thud of something wet fall on her face. She looked up and saw Tracy laughing and pointing towards Matthew whom said "Oops. Did not see you there." A mischievous smile playing on his lips. She did not even know that Matthew had entered the rain. 

Yvie looked at him and smiled slyly. She cracked her neck and with all the force she could summon, threw Matthew with mud. Steven had entered their mud fight too and before long they were all trenched in mud.

After some time, they all fell to the ground due to exhaution. On the ground, Steven convinced them to make "mud angels". They all laughed and flung their arms and legs in the mud , just enjoying each others presence.

All of a sudden, Brandon's watch had went off and made a sound. Brandon sat up and exclaimed in excitement. Tracy asked , "What's going on ?" to Brandon whom only pointed up to the sky.

They all looked up to the sky and gasped. Shining through the rain, the Halley's Comet streaked pass the night sky. They all watched in awe as the ray of : white, blue and purple moved across the sky.

Even the seemed to stop for a moment. It had been a majestic image and Yvie cried at the beauty. She felt someone's hand slip into hers. She knew that touch from a mile away. She smiled at his understanding nature and fell into Stevens lap.

With tears streaming down  Yvie's face, she waved goodbye to the Halley's Comet. They all ended up mimicking her action and waved goodbye to the breathtakingly beautiful  comet.

Steven rubbed her back as she rubbed the tears from her face. She lifted herself up and looked at Steven. She smiled as she placed a small kiss on his ear. She sighed as she got up. Even though she was angry when it started to rain, now that she had to leave, she was bummed. She had enjoyed every moment in the rain and blithely wished she had joined Tracy and Brandon sooner.

Steven placed his hands in Yvie's as they all trudged back to their various houses in silence. When she and Steven got to her house, she hugged and Steven and kissed his chest before turning around and walking to her house.

Cleaning herself that night was an effort. The mud had hardened and she found mud everywhere. When she saw herself in the mirror, she laughed, snapped a picture and sent it to Tracy. Tracy sent her a picture of herself too and they both laughed at each others messy state.

When she climbed into bed that night, a thought struck her. Running in the rain had actually been quite therapeutic. She felt so much more relaxed and at peace. She felt like she could tackle any obstacle head on. 

When she slept that night, she dreamt of blue hues and laughter.
