HJ stared up at the ceiling, trying to make himself fall asleep in this new place to no avail. It didn't feel like home and he didn't know if it ever would.
He was used to hearing Heather talking with one of her friends rather loudly in her room while the sounds of people chatting in the streets seemed to help him sleep. It was much too quiet here and HJ didn't like it. He found it strange and it didn't help him try to fall asleep.
He'd been preaching to Sam about how they should give this place a chance when he himself didn't want to. He just wanted to go home. Home was where his sister was. Home was where his friends where. Not here where the daughter of Maleficent had some sort of vendetta against him for reasons he didn't know.
He didn't know what he'd done to her that had made her hate him so much but he didn't want to think much of it. Mal probably didn't like him because he was friends with Uma. That was all. There was no other explanation he could think of at the moment. He didn't feel like thinking of any other ideas either. It'd make his mind go and on and on and he'd never fall asleep.
HJ looked up when the door knob to his room began shaking like someone was twisting it or trying to break in. He waited for a moment before the door swung open. He relaxed when he saw it was just Sam. She hadn't used a key to open it, she'd used a pin she'd kept in her hair.
He raised an eyebrow but said nothing as she stuck the pin back in her hair. She walked over and laid next to him, staring up at the ceiling.
"Hi Sam." HJ said, propping his head up with his elbow, turning to face her. She glanced at him a smile twitching on her lips. He smiled back.
"Hi HJ." Sam said, turning her head to look at him. "What's up?"
"You're not supposed to be here." HJ said. "It's past curfew."
"I don't remember you being one to care about rules." Sam said, rolling her eyes. "And I walked around for an hour and no one said anything."
"What'd you see?" HJ asked. "I haven't left my room since we got here."
"Nothing much." Sam said. "The school's really big and I met the old queen of Auradon. She was nice. She told me to take this book from the library." Sam held up a book from her jacket pocket. "I don't know why. She said it's a good book. So I took it to be nice. Then I pretended I didn't see Mal was following me the whole time. I didn't know what that was about. Then I came here."
"Can I tell you something?" HJ asked.
"You're already telling me something." Sam said. "But go ahead."
"You know how Mal has that glowy eye thingy?" HJ asked as Sam nodded. "Every time she looked at me, her eyes glowed."
"Okay." Sam said. "That all?"
"She was like 'I want you to say you aren't planning anything.'" HJ said. "So I said I wasn't. Did you know she doesn't like you."
"Changing the subject I see." Sam said. "And it's about me. I did know she doesn't like me, she made it pretty clear. Did she say anything else?"
"Not really." HJ said, putting his hands behind his head and staring up at the ceiling again.
"If you say so." Sam said, closing her eyes before opening them again. "Do you wanna find the kitchen with me?"
"Why?" HJ asked.
"Because I'm fucking hungry." Sam said. "Why else would I want to go to a kitchen?" HJ
"I don't know." HJ said. "It's nearly midnight and everybody is asleep."
He got up anyway as the two of them crept through the hallways, trying not to wake the people of the Prep. After a few twists and turns and dead ends, they finally found the kitchen.
HJ opened up the fridge and found nothing of interest and shut it again. Sam opened up the cupboards, scanning the contents inside.
"What are you two doing in here?" Fairy Godmother asked. "I heard something in the halls and had to check it out."
"Sam was hungry." HJ said. "So I helped her find the kitchen if that isn't a problem."
"No no." Fairy Godmother said. "It is okay. Just make sure to get some sleep. There are classes in the morning."
Fairy Godmother smiled as she exited the kitchen, leaving the two alone.
"Oh what's that?" Sam said, pointing to something on the top shelf. "What type of cookies are those?"
"Chocolate chip." HJ said, peering up at it.
"I don't know what the fuck Chocolate is but I'll take it." Sam said.
"Oh hey guys." Jay said as he and Mal appeared in the door way. "Whatcha doing?"
"Eating cookies." Sam said. "What are you doing?"
"Just walking around." Mal said and HJ understood it as her stalking them once more. Like they'd get the alarm pulled the night they came like the VKs had. Mal thought they were up to no good just like she had.
"Okay." HJ said. "That's cool."
"Yeah." Jay said. "We'll be on our way. If you need any help, we're a few doors down."
The two disappeared as Jay nudged Mal and told her something she didn't like, heading back to their respective dorm.
"That wasn't weird at all." Sam said, eating the last cookie from the box. HJ raised an eyebrow.
"I didn't get to try it." HJ pouted.
"There is crate full of them over there." Sam said.
HJ rolled his eyes.
"I'm not hungry." HJ said. "But I'm tired. We should go to sleep."
"Okay." Sam said, discarding the box in the trash can.
The two walked out of the kitchen, heading the much more easier way back to their dorms. Sam stood at the door of her dorm, yawning.
"Night Hecky." Sam said.
"Night Sam." HJ said, watching her head into the dorm before heading off to his own. He laid on his bed for a minute before sleep consumed him, a dreamless sleep.
