*Luna's POV*
"Can you believe we're on our way to your bachelorette party? This is so crazy! I can't believe my best friend is getting married soon!" Savannah shouted as she drove along the busy streets as we neared her apartment. I glanced out the window and thought back to my high school years. I never once thought I'd be getting married right now.
"It's not a bachelorette party, Van. We're literally going to your apartment to hang out with the boys." I rolled my eyes and changed the radio station before chucking lightly.
"Yes, but we have a reason to hang out. And that reason is that you're getting married! Which is a huge deal if you don't know." She said in a-matter-of-fact tone of voice and I wanted to scream at her and tell her that I did know it was a huge deal. But, I didn't because she didn't know what I was feeling and she was just being an excited best friend like she was supposed to be. Plus, if I were in her shoes I'd be that excited too. If only.
She pulled up and parked in the spot outside her apartment. We slowly walked to her door and I opened it to find Ashton, Michael, Calum, and Luke sitting on the couch watching TV.
"Soon to be married lady is here!" Ashton shouted and jumped up off the couch. Michael ran over from his seat and wrapped his arms around my waist before picking me up off the ground into a giant hug to the point where I was struggling for air. He finally placed me back onto the ground and polietly kissed my cheek before allowing Calum to give me a hug. Ashton followed immediately after him and squeezed me tightly before placing a cheap crown on my head and handing me a sash. Of course they would buy those cheesy little things. I smiled and laughed, before thanking them for being so thoughtful and humorous as they always were. I saw Luke still sitting in the same position on the couch staring right at me. I gave him an awkward smile before he waved at me. A casual wave that you would give an acquaintance if you see them in public. I waved back but could feel the heat rush to my face. I know I told him I couldn't talk to him, but why was he acting like this?
Calum ran to the kitchen quickly before coming back with a beer for everyone and a bottle of some unfamiliar liquor. I winced and they must have seen me because they all began to laugh.
"Come on, wimp. You're getting married, you need to toughen up." Calum announced as he placed his arm on my shoulder and handed me a beer. I elbowed him in the stomach and opened my beer. I held it up for everyone to see and took a drink. They all began to cheer and I rolled my eyes in response to how annoying they were. But I began to smile because that's why I love them.
After some sitting, some talking, some arguing, some watching tv, and some drinking Savannah stood up and stood in the center of the living room.
"Now as you all know, I'm the maid of honor." Savannah held her hand over her heart and looked up at the ceiling like she was Miss America or something. The boys gave a round of 'aws' and Savannah nodded proudly. "Therefore, I do not want to ruin the surprise of my speech by giving it now. However we had a generous offer from someone special here tonight to give a speech in replacement." I smiled at how thoughtful they were all being. Even though it was just sitting at an apartment and drinking beer, I was still flattered that they cared enough about me to do this much.
"Unfortunately, I declined the position of Maid of Honor because I knew how badly Savannah wanted it so this is why you won't hear this speech at the actual wedding. Although, I would have looked fantastic in a dress. It's not too late to change your mind, Lune." Ashton stated loudly and proudly as he took Savannah's place in the center of the room. I chuckled at his jokes and felt warm and fuzzy inside as I always did when Ashton talked. He had that effect on people; happiness. I heard the front door going outside open and all our heads whipped around to find Luke about to leave the apartment.
"Sorry, I think I need some air. I'm feeling sick." He waved and gave a sheepish smile before closing the door behind me. I winced and shut my eyes before I heard Ashton begin speaking again.
"Lune, I've known you for years. It's weird to see how much you've changed since we were younger. You look older now, still just as awkward but older. You're more mature but still just as immature. You have the quality to bring people together and make people happy. I hope that your gift of bringing people together has been returned to you. I hope you are truly happy in your life and with your signficant other. Wherever you end up, I hope you feel the happiness you deserve to feel. You deserve to be with someone who is just as wonderful as you are, who understands you, and treats you like the queen you are. I remember when we first started high school, someone asked you what you wanted to be when you were older and you simply and strongly said 'happy and in love'. I hope you feel that, all of it. I love you so much, Lune and I cherish our friendship. I wish you nothing but love and happiness." I didn't realize it but tears were rolling down my cheeks. Ashton held up a wine glass filled with nothing other than beer and toasted to me. I laughed and then ran over to give him a hug. He pulled me in and I smiled before telling everyone I needed to step outside for a moment as the tears continued to roll down my face.
I stepped outside and then jumped after seeing a body sitting on the front step. The figure turned around and I saw Luke's face looking red and blotchy. I sat down on the step next to him without saying a word but I could see him watching me out of the corner of my eye.
"Why?" His deep voice broke the silence of the night. I turned to look at him and arched my eyebrow before wiping a tear off my cheek. "Why are you doing all of this?"
"All of what?"
"Isolating me." His voice whispered and then he sighed, "Marrying him. Everything."
"Because I love him, Luke. You don't understand. We had something a long time ago and I went away. I love him now and then you came back into my life. It was harder than I thought it would be. Having both of you just wouldn't work together."
"It could though, and it should. You shouldn't have to choose, Luna. If you really love him, what we had shouldn't matter." His voice came across harsh and I whinced at the sound of pain in his voice.
"It just makes things complicated, okay. I knew you wouldn't understand."
"We both know I understand. You just don't want to believe it. You don't love him. You never have. You're scared of it all now because of your feelings for me. Can you just admit that to me and stop running for a second?" He stood up from the step and threw his hands in the air.
"You're wrong."
"If you truly loved him you wouldn't need to do all of this to me or to yourself. Don't you see how much this hurts me?" He questioned me but I couldn't look him in the eye. I couldn't bear to see his blue eyes dim in the dark night. "I can't stand here and wait for you to realize anymore, Luna. Goodbye." He said quietly and as though he had been defeated as he walked down the stairs and down the side walk.
Tears began to escape my eyes one by one until I couldn't distinguish the beginning of one to the other. They just continued to flow. I heard the door behind me open but I didn't want to turn around. Then I saw the figure sit down next to me on the step. I saw Ashton's head of hair and felt his arm wrap around my waist.
"Want to tell me what just went on here?"
"You saw?" He nodded slightly and I placed my head into his chest. He pulled me in for a hug and I let out a deep breath.
"I saw Luke's angry face, him leaving, and you looking devastated. What happened?"
I tried to muster up an answer through my shaky voice and wheezy crys.
"I'm alone." I stated simply knowing that the one I was supposed to love couldn't truly give me any love and the one who could truly bring me happiness had just walked away.
