~Emma POV~
The children have taken it well, so now chemotherapy can officially begin. One step closer to final destination of health.
"No, you go, I'll be fine" I confirm to my husband, who is due to fetch our children. "I've got Regina to boss around"
"What's new?" She scoffs.
"I'll get the kids from your mother" he confirms, giving me one last kiss before the nurse prepares me and soon enough he leaves, just me and Regina; which is what I prefer. She doesn't look at my sympathetically, she doesn't see me as ill. We're still best friends.
"Ok, I've got magazines, nail art, funny YouTube videos" she says pulling all sorts out of her bag.
"Oh! I've got a sexy bed" I moan with pleasure, kicking back the head rest and slouching more as though I'm on vacation. "Did you bring a vibrator?" I joke.
"Several" she teases back.
"Yes!"
Suddenly my nurse enters, and now reality is back. There are several moment I forget about my cancer. "Regina, this is nurse Sam. Sam this is regina. My elderly companion"
My friend just rolls her eyes and smiles flashing a small wave to my nurse.
"Sam, I want a blue hat"
"Just so you know, with your chemo, there's only about a 20% chance it'll save your hair" he informs, but I want a blue hat. To fit in, maybe to have the full experience. "And some find it quite painful"
"Worked for me" a younger patient says beside me.
"Get me the blue cap" I command.
"She wants the blue cap" Regina backs me up, making Sam feel as though he gets no other choice and he gives in.
"She's getting the blue cap" he wonders off to retrieve my hat and also comes back with a rather large needle. He taps on her hand finding the best vein to insert and finally finds his goal.
~Regina POV~
"Wow that is a big prick" I widen my eyes at the size of the needle.
"The needle or Sam?" emma jokes, earning a funny scowl from Sam, but we all know we're going, we probably his best patients.
"Hey!" But soon enough, he tapes the needle to the skin. "That's a beautiful vein"
"I always said your veins were beautiful" and again were chuckling away at absolutely nothing funny. This isn't a matter of laughter, but yet here we are.
"You kind of look like a superhero" I state as I take in her appearance, her pale skin getting whiter and whiter every second. "I just can't place who, I don't know if you're a good guy or bad"
Maybe this conversation is to keep her awake and aware of what is happening but let's face it we all know the hat is getting colder and lower temperature in attempt to rescue her hair.
"It may be captain america" I question. "Or aqua girl?" I don't even know if she is a superhero, but right now I will say anything that sweeps my mind.
"Whichever one it is, lives in an igloo" she huffs, tugging up her blanket to keep her body warm.
"Is it cold?" I dumbly question. Of course it's cold, but I don't feel it so the only way to understand is by asking these questions.
"I have an ice-cream headache, as though I've eaten the entire shop" she informs, and for some strange reason, this description helps a way to understand, because there was once where our brains were so frozen from eating so many tubs of ice cream when she was first pregnant with Scarlet.
"Definitely captain america" I nod, changing the subject yet again.
The chemo took forever, days on end, weeks on end, but nothing seemed to be helping, the only think keeping my hope alive is praying to god for her health everyday. Still I need to find a way to tell her i am pregnant but I just can't find a way. She is my best friend and she has been just as excited as I am, she's been wishing for this day for so long, but how do I tell her now? That I've created such a wonderful baby and brought it to this amazing world, yet god seems to be slowly stripping Emma fro this world day by day, little by little and that's not okay.
Emma said my job is to turn up, with all the treats and fun stuff to keep chemotherapy as fun as it can be I suppose, she also wishes for me not to be annoying, however, when I'm not being annoying I'm crying. I'm sure she will prefer annoying over emotional. I just cannot stand seeing my best friend in this state.
"So Regina, you are in charge of these." Nurse Sam wonders over with recyclable bowls in case of any nausea, which is expected with cancer and chemotherapy.
"Recycled vomit bowls' I sarcastically accept from his grasp and rest them upon my lap.
"We won't be needing those because I taken my meds" Emma confirms, shaking her pill bottle to grab his attention. These tablets were supposed to prevent her from feeling drowsy and sick, but I see deep down how these are not helping and I see her pale skin get lighter every day.
"I may need one after seeing that enormous needle go into your veins" I chuckle watching nurse Sam tap the needle and check the fluid levels.
"Do you want one of my pills?"
"Yes" I gasp.
"Girls. We're not at Glastonbury, you can't just swap pills" nurse Sam sternly warns but he knows we're joking, after 2 months of treatment, he is used to our childhood, inappropriate ways.
"Oh no fun" we both sulk in unison.
Then days more passed, and unfortunately Emma didn't win the chance of saving her hair, her beautiful wavy blonde tresses where coming off, so I suggested the best wig maker in town, Jill.
~Emma POV~
"Hello darling. I'm Jill, I'm thinking we take off your hair, and replace it for one much simpler to brush" she suggests within seconds of me walking in and taking a seat in front of her rather large mirror. "It's so much easier to take your hair off to style, trust me" she winks. But I sense that she sees my hesitation, however then again this is hard for me, I never wanted my hair to go and yet her we are, shaving it off. "You ready sweetheart"
I take one deep breath, taking in one last view of my hair before it is officially gone for good. I give her the nod of consent and screw my eyes painfully shut not wanting to see what's she is about to do to my beautiful hair. The drilling ear piercing razor for fills the air, then the cold breezy air hits my scalp and I can only presume she has taken it all off.
"I'm going to spin you around so you can't see, you can look when you're ready" she informs, so I nod along still keeping my eyes shut until I feel her spinning my chair around, away from the mirror. Suddenly I hear gasps and my eyes force open to see my mother and Regina staring in awe.
"You have amazing cheekbones, you look stunning Emmy" she beams wondering over and running her hands all over my bald head making me giggle and gain the confidence to finally look. I don't look like me, not at all, but I also don't look bad, however I still need hair to feel more me. "I'm sort of jealous that you can pull off anything"
"How about this wig? Very similar to your hair colour and you have this gorgeous full fringe" Jill says as she puts the wig on my head and adjusts it to fix in the right position.
"Wow" Regina gasps. "Even I fancy you" she winks but at this moment I thought she was joking, little did I know there was more of a connection.
