Chapter 18
Imagine the shocked and confused look that would have taken place on my face the moment my best friend who was previously being consoled by my crush minutes ago yelled at me, calling me a "Liar and Wicked."
Well I wasn't in fact confused at all, I knew exactly what she was implying and why I was wicked. I'd promised Reen that I wouldn't let anyone beat her even though I was fully aware that, that was totally impossible. I just did it to keep her from whining and groaning about how the beating would be painful.
Yes, Reen was that kind of person. I atleast hoped that I'd keep a few people away and tell her I tried. But it wasn't my fault that she was MIA the whole morning. What did she expect me to do, search the school for her? That seemed like what a normal friend would do, our friendship wasn't normal, so she shouldn't expect normal things. I know that didn't make sense but I needed an excuse to keep Reen from being mad at me and that was exactly what I told her and it worked like a charm.
"I don't still forgive you but I want my gift, so where is it?" I blinked once. Then twice. Then I let her words sink in slowly, not only did I forget today was the day, I'd also forgotten to get her a gift. Oh earth, please swallow me now. "I left it at home joor."
The small lie oozed out of my lips like a Travis Greene song and I instantly felt guilty. I hated lying. Even if it was a small lie, it was still a sin and a sin was always just a sin. Maureen eyed me before rolling her eyes. Then she pursed her lips and turned to our other friends.
The battle was over. She'd believed my lie and we were back to being friends again. My friends and I had different odd ways of communicating that seemed widely strange and freaky to outsiders but it was our way, our friendship.
By the end of the day, Maureen had been showered with gift after gift. It scared me how some of them were able to hide their gifts and pass it through our gate, with the searching and all. How can a child pass fully packed headphones through the search line.
Reeny's bag was so filled that a bunch of things couldn't be contained and she had to put some in my bag. Perks of being popular I guess. I don't remember anyone giving me a gift on my last year birthday.
Lucky for us, there was no lesson today so we went home early. Except for the extra long prayer from the teachers to Maureen which took at least half an hour. I admit. I was jealous as hell. My birthdays were cool and I did get gifts but it was during Christmas and my gifts were nothing compared to half the ones Reeny got. The biggest gift I got last year was a jewelry set from my aunty, which I still wear once in a while.
Outside school sucked. Most of the time, I'd spend at least half an hour with my friends whilst they talk with random Ekun boys at the bus stop but till date, I'm still not accustomed to it and I don't think I ever will.
This very day was even worse. I was forced to watch the inevitable against my own will. Reen and Joseph were acting cozy as hell as they talked in hushed tones, while I leaned against the other end wall of the bust stop building. At some very short intervals' Reen would laugh loudly but hush herself almost immediately.
My eyes remained glued to the couple who were standing out of sight, leaning against one of the walls with my fists clenched. "Even if you stare at them forever, It's your eyes that will fall out not theirs."
I held back a scream as my heart jumped in my chest, my body spinning around to see who had decided it would be fun to scare my physics definitions out of me. Daniel. He had one brow up and the other brow down, His white was almost the color of snow, his tie was out of it bind and this pants were lower than usual, oh don't forget the signature 3 inch high sandals with white lining the bottom part. Typical Ekun boy.
"What are you talking about?" I eyed him with disgust as he laughed lightly. "Should I help you?" I eyed him once again and lifted the right part of my upper lip, crossing my arms in annoyance. "Did you take codeine or something?" Once again he laughed except this time it was humorously.
I pursed my lip waiting for him to say something and seconds later he did. "I know you want to date that Joseph boy even though I don't see why, and I want to, no, I will help you." He threw me a confident smile like this was a deal I would never reject.
"Why would you help me?" Then I noticed this suspicious look in his eye for a second and I took a step to the side unconsciously. "I have my reasons." I furrowed my brows at this odd creature, he looked impatient but still calm. As if he wanted me to reply immediately but understood what I was thinking. "How would you help me?"
Daniel's lips curved into a devious smile as he whispered, "Like this." In less than a second, he took my hand into his grip and went on one knee. With his voice as loud as a car horn, he yelled, "Kolupo Davis, please be my girlfriend." Then my jaw dropped.
